I have found a little problem with my S4i which is that two times it hanged!!! Neither the on-off button works, so I must put off the battery!!!
It hanged when I was pushing the shutter button.
I'm testing it to decide if I must return it or not!.

Your problem is part of the dreaded A90 error code these cameras get. My camera had this last year and updated firmware cured it till this month when my wife let the battery go dead and the problem returned, but firmware update won't fix it this time around.Go to Pentax site and download new firmware for camera. Follow instructions that come from Pentax on the download to install software. Its pretty easy. These are cheap cameras as far as Pentax is concerned. They only work for about 2 years, based on other users and my experience. Good luck
I don't know for sure, but it sounds like it could be a memory card problem. Have you tried it with another card or no card at all?
My S4i froze up completely from a bad sd card. The green power button would light up, but nothing else would happen. Pentax recommends Lexar or Panasonic sd cards from what I have heard. My new Lexar card hasn't had any issues.
Forget the LCD. The optical viewfinder shows only 72-77% of the actual picture. Just align the edges of the viewfinder and you will have plenty of overlap for stitching. I find it much easier to get accurate panorama shots with the optical finder anyway. You can lock the angle and just rotate your shoulders – much easier than holding the camera in front of you.
Are you sure the S4i locks the exposure in panorama mode? My S4 doesn’t, which is one of my beefs with the camera.
