Hard drive not recognized
Hopefully your like me and have the "My computer" icon on your desktop. as this is the easiest way to access the Disk management utility.
1.) Right click "My Computer" and select "Manage" from the drop down list
2.) Below "System Tools" is a category titled "Storage" there is a sub category to this title "Disk Management" single click on this. That will bring up the disk management utility
3.) it may take a moment for the disk manager to load but once it does it will show ALL the disks currently attached to your PC including Hard drive, CD/DVD's, thumbdrives etc..... The one you want will likely be "Disk 1" be listed with the part number for your new drive WD ***** for Western Digital ST ***** for Seagate HT ***** for Hitachi etc...... and be "Unformated"
4.) right click on the NEW drive (Be SURE it is the new drive and labeled "UNFORMATTED" because if you do this on your Operating systems drive you WILL loose all information on that drive and have to reinstall windows) and select "Format" from the drop down list. This will pop up a dialog box asking for information on HOW to format your drive. If you want to give the drive a name put that in you :"Label" box there might be an option for "Quick" or "Full" format since this is the first time the disk is getting formatted do the FULL
5.) hit the format button and it will give you a warning that all data will be erased from the disk and ask you to confirm that this is what you want. Click "Accept" and you will be on your way. depending on the size of the drive this could take anywhere from 10 minutes to several hours be patient and don't interrupt it.
6.) Once the format is complete Windows will request to reboot the PC (It needs to do this because Hard drives get priority in drive lettering and will reboot so this new HD gets the next letter after your primary) Example: Before your HD1 is C:\ and your optical was D:\ After HD1 is C:\ HD2 is D:\ and Optical becomes E:\
After the reboot check in My computer for the NEW drive. It should be there and ready for you to use.
If not please post back here what your results are and I will do my best to find you a solution.
