Hi,

This is a typical problem with units that uses this type of display. Often the problem would be the bulb(s) that provide the backlight for the small display panel. These bulbs function in a similar fashion as the backlight of cellphones LCD and laptops display LCD.

Repair would require a fair familiarity of electronic components/circuitry and safety procedures, use of a DVM and a soldering iron. It would be to your added advantage access to a service manual or at the very least a schematic diagram with voltage readings. Should you be uncomfortable performing a DIY (do-it-yourself), perhaps your best bet would then be to seek the services of a qualified professional.

If you are considering DIY (do-it-yourself), you need to remove the top panel/cover and gain access to the rear of the display and the rectangular PCB board. The bulbs are usually inside a white plastic housing to focus all the light forward.

There are two ways of going about the repairs:

  • replace bulb with identical part normally and readily available from most electronics supply store;
  • modify by using a high intensity LED, a dropping resistor and a capacitor. Here is a video of a similar repair on another brand with identical problem (credit to miguelovitch).
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

I have a sony cdp cx355 that seems to have a disc stuck and the door will not open to remove it. How should I proceed?

You have to remove the cabinet to expose the inner workings. Once inside, you should be able to see the stuck CD. Be careful to avoid damaging any parts of the player mechanism as you work the CD back into the carriage. You may find that once the CD is back in place normal operation resumes.

Cdp-ce215 sony cd player display dead.

Yes, most likely it is the display. Your best bet is to sell it for parts/as is on craigslist or the likes, and purchase a replacement as a comparable replacement would be very inexpensive. If you have any other questions let me know.
Thanks,
Lee
