Question about Compaq Presario X1000 Notebook
Robert, My computer does randomly shut down, but I think it is because it is actually running off the battery, even though the power cord is plugged in and says it's plugged in, so I was thinking it shuts down because the battery runs out. The fan runs at power up, but I don't think it runs any other time - is is suppose to? I opened the fan assembly and it was just a little dusty.
Do you think if I fix/replace the fan, the power might work? I can sometimes get power when I wiggle the power cord or hold it a certain way, but it has gotten progressively worse where I can hardly get it to make connection at all. And when I pull it out, the adapter feels hot. I'm thinking it is actually the dc power jack, which I don't think I can fix myself. Thanks for your help.

It is the DC jack. It has either cracked or come loose at the solder joints. This has been a vexing, yet commong problem on these Presarios. The replacement can be found for at little as $5. It is a simple, yet time-consuming repair. Search out the service manual on the compaq website. You will have to disassemble the laptop to get to the DC jack. I recommend using ziploc sadnwich bags and a sharpie to store and label all the various components and their appropriate screws.
The manual is critical as the laptop is disassembled in a particular order that you can really figure out just by looking at it.
The repaired DC jack lasted less than a year, now it is loose again. It really comes down to a design flaw on the part of Compaq, placing the DC jack in a high-stress location and not really reinforcing the DC jack attachment point in anyway (only the solder joint holds it only the board).
Order more than one jack, as you will likely make this repair again in the future.

Two things... put your hand on the bottom of it.... is it really hot and second any chance of trying another power cord on that ?. I believe you mentioned you tried that cord on another computer. perhaps use the other cord on yours to test it .
