That error indicates an "incorrect status" of your optical drive. I suggest you run the Dell diagnostics on your drive. To test your CD/DVD drive from the utility partition:
1. Reboot your system. When you see the Dell logo, hit F12 to enter the boot menu.
2. Select Boot to utility partition.
3. Select Test System.
4. Select Custom Test.
5. Use the arrow keys or mouse to select your CD/DVD drive.
6. Insert a CD or DVD.
7. Click Run Tests.
8. Write down any error messages.
download REGcure from the net and istall it on your computer. run it and it will tell you where to find that code and delete it.
alternatively, since you do not have the disc anymore, find someone with the same windowa version though they would have different product keys. for vista, run upgrade so that you will not loose your data and the windows will be replaced with new registry. for XP, run the set up configuration as if you istall a fresh copy, after accepting the terms by microsoft, there would be options there to install a fresh copy or to recover the existing. press R to recover and wait for the next prompts. on this too, you will not loose your data because you not formatting but replacing the window with a new registry to help your computer to use all its hardwares efficiently withour errors.
Apparently a common error; if you google error 4280 you'll get several different versions of what is happening. Some blame the Sony CD's other blame Dell, HP, etc...like I said there is a long list so I didn't want to pick out just one, it depends on your Computer type, combined with the CDs..so go ahead and take a look. Personally from reading some of the fixes I came up with; don't use Sony disc and run at 16x to get rid of the error. Hope this helps..
