Question about Compaq Presario X1000 Notebook

Compaq Presario X1000 power issues

I'm having intermintent power problems. Computer sometimes won't recognize power cord inserted (power cord works on another computer, so don't think that's the problem). Getting worse, now won't charge battery unless the computer is turned off. I took it apart, but can't see how to fix/replace the piece where the power cord plugs in, if that is the problem. I think the fan may not be working, which I think would be easy to replace. Are the two related?
I've had this computer for almost 5 years and love it, don't want to have to get a new one if possible, and want to fix myself if possible.

Computer does randomly shut down, but I think it is because it is actually running off the battery, even though the power cord is plugged in and says it's plugged in, so I was thinking it shuts down because the battery runs out. But I don't think the fan runs anymore. Do you think if I fix/replace the fan, the power might work?

    Thanks for your help.

Got to the HP forums - there are NUMEROUS cases the same as this - including mine. They say I need to have the DC connector either replaced or resoldered. Seems that HP installed poor quality connectors.

    Won't buy their product again.

    It should have been recalled.

Unassemble the fan and see if there is a lot of dirt and dust in there. If the fan is NOT working you need to fix that issue before you do anything else. Does the computer randomly shut down ?

The battery on my laptop stopped charging, but was working for a over a week, then it was acting funny and slow.. I shut down moved to another room and it won't boot up! The light doesn't come on...

I think your power cord is bad. It probably was not charging the battery at all and so now all your battery power has drained since you were running on it. Once the battery power is drained and if the AC Adapter Power Cord is not working the computer will not boot because it has no power source.

Some AC Adapter & Power Cords have lights on them to let you know when it is plugged in if it is working. Normally when you plug the power cord in the laptop somewhere on the laptop lights up to let you know it is receiving power. Sometimes the light is where you plug it in, sometimes at the front of the laptop or right above the keyboard area.

I thing you need a power cord. And don't settle for one of the one size fits all (with a removable tip designed to fit any laptop) that the big box stores will sell you.

If your power cord is good and the laptop is not receiving power then the problem could be your DC Power Jack where the power cord plugs into the computer.

Maybe your DC Power Jack which is where the power cord plugs into the computer is bad. Take an ink pen and push the tip inside the jack and see if the little pin wiggles, if so the jack is bad. You'll have to take the laptop apart to fix it. Most times it is soldered onto the motherboard, so you will have to desolder the old and solder a new one.

Computer will not turn on. when power button is pushed, battery and power cord lights flash on and off. Plugging in does not help. How can I make my computer work again?

Try doing this:

1. Remove the battery and unplug the computer.
2. While there is no power connected, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds
3. Plug the computer back in, but don't insert the battery yet
4. See if it will turn on now, and if it does, insert the battery again.

Sometimes this works to drain some residual power that is still inside the machine. I've done this on a couple of machines and it has resulted in them starting up fine. If this doesn't work, you may have a more serious problem and need to have it looked at by a technician.

I purchased an Imation Apollo || and my Macintosh computer won't recognize it. The blue light stays on, but that's it.

Please run disk utility and see if you can find it physically first.

If you do, please format it.

If you don't, first connect it by using very short usb cable into back of your mac. (Sometimes, usb ports in front or monitor don't provide its power fully.)

I hope it helps.

My iphone is hanged its shows apple logo only, hw can i solved this problem without loosing my all data, like my videos, contacts, pictures, pls help me out

Try pressing and holding both the POWER & the HOME button at the same time for around 3 to 10 seconds until it turns OFF. Then turn it back on again.

If it still won't go past the Apple logo, use tinyumbrella to Fix Recovery or to Exit out of Recovery. Download tinyumbrella using the links below: for Mac for PC (Windows)

Update tinyumbrella first if it tells you that there's newer version available.

NOTE: Your computer must be able to recognize your iPhone before you can use tinyumbrella to fix it. If your computer could not recognize your iPhone, you first need to put it to DFU mode. To learn more about DFU mode, CLICK HERE.

If those things still don't work, you'll have no other choice but to restore. Again, your computer must be able to recognize your iPhone before you can restore it using iTunes. Put it to DFU mode if your computer won't recognize it.

Have you checked if the hard drive is being recognized on Bios? If it is not, try changing the power cord or pushing it in and pay attention to see if it rotates... Sometimes when you push power cord into hard drive it would start.
Best wishes!!

Installation issue - Not recognizing

hmm, no problem plugging in either side, just be sure to do the power cable first. What's doing the beep, beep?

Found a guy who had similar prob, here was his solution:
Go to Control Panel. Click on Device Manager.
Check to see if FreeAgent is shown as a disk drive.
If not, check the device list for any Free Agent device, double click and check driver. No driver installed? Update does not work? On the driver tab….click uninstall device.
Shut down computer. Unplug Free agent USB and power at the drive.
Reboot computer. As it is rebooting, plug in the power cord. Wait a minute or two….then plug in USB cord.

Windows will “found new device” ….. Just let the computer complete the reboot.
Then go to the device manager. Chances are you will find Free Agent in the drives….and in the USB list of devices. Open windows explorer….and you should see you Free Agent as a drive.
Windows will ask you to install manufacturer disk. You have no disk…non needed. Windows has installed the device. Just click on close. I you keep getting windows wants to install device…..ignore it. You can click on “don’t ask again”. (That is if your Free Agent drive is showing in the device manager as a disk…and in windows explorer….along with your other drive or drives.)
If at some later time….your Free Agent drive does not appear….repeat the steps as listed above.
(You may think it is not working….or that it has gone bad. Try this before you try to return.)
Seagate Tools…the new version….does not recognize to diagnose the Free Agent….
I have not tried Seagate Tools after getting the computer to recognize the drive.
I am surprised Seagate does not provide a Tool to recognize their own drives…and install and/or test Free Agent.

This does work for me with Vista. Thought I had lost the drive…. Seagate should provide a patch or a drive that Windows will recognize when you get the “found new hardware” and Windows asks you to insert manufacturer’s installation disk. I do not understand why that is not already there….a driver file for Free Agent...that Windows would install.

I did not buy Pro….because I did not need the backup software. I wonder if those who bought Pro are having these problems.

If the pictures are stuck in your internal camera memory, you will need a cord to get them off unelss you can transfer them to your memory card first. You should be able to copy the pics there.
