To follow up on rDx22's suggestion about monitoring the processes in Task Manager. Note the CPU processes column, click on the CPU title a couple of times to list the processes in decending order and this may help you determine which process (program) may be slowing your computer down. It may be your virus protection software, a virus/spyware, unnecessary program, etc. Click on it and terminate it if possible, see if the video or music play at a normal speed.

Let us know the results, perhaps we can provide you additional information.

Hey
There can be many things that can cause your computer to slow down.
First of all Viruses .. some viruses once in the computer are difficult to be recognized by normal anit-viruses they generally make your computer go slow, such a problem can be solved either by getting a better anti virus or by formatting your system
There can be another reason... have you check how many processes are running on your comp?
ctrl + alt + delete go to processes... now a normal XP os needs only 17-20 applications to run properly ... so anything in excess to it is being run on your computer to provide some sort of service to you(you must not start stopping those extra processes w/o knows what they are doing).Try closing some of the applications this should make your computer work faster
There can be another reason... the drive space in your OS drive Say Drive C is very less ... should be above 500 Mb for smooth functioning.. in such a case delete unwanted files..

Slow internet, gaming, everything.

Try Chrome browser, but Windows based systems tend to slow down with time. Specially with older and slower systems like mine. Try disabling startup processes. In Windows Start > Run (search in Win 7) type msconfig. Go to Startup and disable anything that you don't require to start. They will kick off only when you run the programs instead of utilizing resources like memory and CPU for the get go.

Seems my toshiba satellite lap-top is over heating, how do I get to the fan to clean it? Model number: psafgu-02k001 serial; x7253530q

If your fan is running OK, then it probably doesn't need cleaning.

I have a satellite A350 and it pumps out a LOT of heat but that doesn't mean it's overheating. It's more likely your CPU usage is very high, which makes it very hot.

Turn on the CPU Meter in the Windows sidebar and close all applications. Watch the CPU usage (the larger front meter) for about 20-30 seconds. If the AVERAGE level when running no other applications is over 40% or spiking up at 90 or 100% then you are probably running too much junk in the background, or you have a virus.

try to restore your system using restore point located in accessories/system tools, if problem still exist no other choice is to reformat your system, maybe your system infected with virus. antivirus cannot protect 100% of the system even it is updated regularly.

First off my scroll bar stopped working. now when

HP Quickplay is already a blotware (bulky). Try some other players like VLC or media player classic.

About the touchpad, there's no scroll because u have not loaded the driver at startup. Only basic touchpad driver is loaded. So, u need to add the driver program to startup. I hope it would be of synaptics. Run the pgm in program files folder. Ur scroll will be fine

I have a Dell Vostro 1700 with widows XP. when i play a clip from Utube it continually pauses, starts, pauses, starts, etc..

There could be a couple reasons for this:

1. Your comptuer has too many background tasks running to be able to keep up with decoding the video and playing it.

2. Your Internet connection is too slow - possibly due to virus on the computer? Also a virus would also increase CPU cycles giving rise to part of the cause in #1.

What I would do is right click to the right of the Start bar and choose task manager and click the performance tab. Look to see if your CPU usage hovers under 10% max while nothing is happening. If you see spikes, they may be normal but a constant usage over 10% is a sign something is consuming CPU cycles. Click on processes to see if you can identify the application.

To test your Internet BW or get a reasonable indication of it's performance, do a download test. Sites like speakeasy.net offer such a test.

Last but not least, Windows XP should have at least 1GB of RAM as a bare minimum. Anything less will cause paging and if you have high CPU usage, your paging will go up causing a waterfall effect as paging increases demand on CPU as well as Disk I/O.

Problems with video playback--Video keeps skipping.

First of all make sure your internet speed is right. Make sure no third party program is running in the background which is taking up CPU resources. You can also download DVD decoder like Klite codec free from www.download.com and reinstall the flash player from www.adobe.com
