XP re-boots during first sync of Visor Edge

I recently bought a new Compaq pc - loaded Palm Desktop on it and attempted a sync - about 20% through step 2, the system re-boots (this is reproducable) - Sooooo I tried to download a newer copy of the desktop (I'm using 4.0.1, but thought that there may be something wrong with my copy) but need the serial number; however, I purchased the Edge refurb from Handspring, and some clown marked over the serial number with a marker. I've tried to just remove all the Palm Desktop & Sync software, but although the program goes through the motions of uninstalling, everything's still there. I can't even get this junk off the pc so I can upgrade to another brand of PDA - HELP!!!

I had to fool PalmOne, but I fixed my problem I couldn't download the current version of 4.0.1 because some clown at Handspring painted over my serial number. But I also have a Visor Prism (yeah, I'm just a sucker!) and used THAT model and serial number to get the software from PalmOne. Then I re-installed the desktop from the CD, uninstalled it (the uninstall did work this time) and re-installed the downloaded version of Desktop - would you believe it, it WORKED! Yippee! I even cancelled my order for a Compaq PDA (the Edge isn't all that good, but it IS paid for!) - Hope you get your problem solved like I did -

Unfortunately, there is no change to this behavior when you download a new copy of the 4.0.1 desktop software. I have the same issue, only it used to crash my system about every 5th or 6th sync. Now it seems to do it every time. I also ran the utility which eliminates the registry entries, and then reloaded the hotsync/desktop software, but the crashes continue. I too, have a Presario. I'm wondering if we have a driver problem with the PC.

Lost my entire palm desktop calendar and need it back!!


Unless you have a copy of the data for your Palm backed up on Mac or an external hard drive or a copy of the data backed up on your Palm I think you can consider it gone. Mac's do that even with ipods or iphones if you're not careful. Having a true backup/copy of the data somewhere separate from the regular sync setup helps avoid this. Syncing is not the same as a backup regarding data such as this.

These applications need to be added to your Palm desktop installer program located on your computer.  Once the Palm is plugged in the applications will be added during the sync process.

Old VISOR


Congratulations on your 'first generation' Handspring Visor purchase. While perhaps 'old technology' in the techno world, I am still using mine today. To answer your question, your Visor is simply attempting to 'synch' with your desktop files (to ensure you have the correct data in both places. Your error stems from the fact that the unit is 'searching' for your desktop files to perform that handshake. Like an unanswered telephone; your Visor 'hangs up.' You will need to install the software on your PC. Yes, there is still software out there. ;-)

Migrating software and data to new computer


Assume that your Visor is your data respository. So you should make sure that you have an up-to-date synchronization from the NT PC. Now get the XP compatible software for your Visor from the palmOne website and install it on the XP box. I assume that you will be synching via USB this time - this is the default setup when you install the software. Hopefully you still have the USB cradle that came with the Visor. You can still use serial sync with XP but you should try to take advantage of the speed of USB on the new PC. Download for XP & Visors: http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/visor/win_desktop_401.html Once the software is installed, sync with the new computer and all your data should be copied from the Visor to your PC in the first synchronization. By the way, Outlook shouild be installed on the new computer before you install the Visor software; otherwise the installer will not offfer to install the PocketMirror conduits.

Windows XP, Palm m130, & Outlook 2003 - Sync problem


It sounds like the computer is noticing the USB activity (from when you hit the HotSync button) but for some reason it can't find the correct information/driver. I'd first try a soft reset (stick a paper clip or the end of your stylus may screw off to reveal a pin, in the hole at the back of your palm) Don't worry, it won't delete your info UNLESS YOU HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON (SO DON'T). Once it's booted back up, try the hotsync again. If that doesn't work, you may need to find the usb driver for your palm and reinstall it. This could just be copying a file from disc, or reloading your Palm Software. Good luck

How get Drivers PALMUSB.SYS for USB cradle


Problem is fixed: Not sure how I fixed but I think it was when I shutdown PC and restarted. Then I tried to SYNC again AND then I found WINDOWS saying it found new hardware (the cradle). This time I knew to say I'd tell where the drivers were and I chose the Drivers directory of Handspring directory and the installation proceeded OK this time. (drivers are PALMUSBD.inf and PALMUSBD.sys) I can then SYNC with Outlook 2003
