After removing the screw you must place your thumb on the battery cover (just below the screw where the 5 raised lines are) and slide the cover downward. The battery in this unit is soldered in. You may have to take it to a repair center to get the battery changed. The battery is a D-Sc type 1600mAh 1.2V. Good luck finding one. I thought the battery in my trimmer was bad after it sat idle for about 8 years. Turns out a little light sewing machine oil on the cutter head made it spring back to life.

Remove the bottom screw. Next, the on/off slide switch has to be lifted off carefully with a small flat screw driver. Its kept in place with a small spring steel clamp. After you've removed it lift off the steel clamp and remove the slide mechanism by carefully twisting it out of position. Once that's done it will twist open easily.
