How can you change the route (choose a different freeway) on garmin nuvi gps?

Some GPS has this problem once in a while. When it happens, turn the GPS off and restart it again. Problems should be solved.

No. it depends on your settings. You can choose fastest route, shortest route or to avoid like toll, U-turn, ferry, or..... check your settings and reset it as suitable for your driving situation.

Set the fastest route. The shortest route will take you off motorways and up narrower roads. Garmin satnavs know the difference between fastest and shortest.

Thats the problem it thinks the shortest route is the way it is doing it... switch mode back to normal. NOT shortest route.

Once you click Where To at the bottom of screen click Near

choose Where I am now ..... A different City....Current route or Destination

On most Garmins there's a button marked "detour". On the touch screen versions it's an on-screen button rather than a physical button.

You might be choosing Shortest Route and that's exactly what it will do - find the shortest route, no matter what the quality of the roads. You should try choosing Fastest Route.

You must call Garmin at 1-800-800-1020 they will walk you through plugging in nuvi to your computer (must have usb cord) and it will upload then go to my computer and choose garmin drive then click garmin folder and either find the folder they say or make new one like I did with the guy on the phone and put in code. The only information needed is the numbers on the bottom of the device.... super fast fix!

Check the settings. There are options to choose, the fastest route, shortest distance, etc.

Also, consider the avoidances settings
