Go to www.linksys.com and search for the driver for that device. find the one for 98 and if you can't find one chances are it is not supported.

You are using a B wireless adater on windows XP computer.
Tere might be adapter utility installed on your computer. You can use that software to connect to the wireless network or you can switch over to windows software to connect.
It will be better if you use the WINDOWS XP to connect to the network.
Check the wireless settings of the router also.

It appears that the Windows service WLAN Auto Config was stopped due to an unknown reason. After re-activating this service I was able to install the wireless usb adapter 100% correctly. The Windows service WLAN Auto Config can be found if you run the program msconfig.

Taking forever to just connect to router

Try to connect the USB adapter to a different USB port on the back of your computer. Make sure the adapter is plugged in to the back of your PC not to the front.

Need to set up a wireless connection

Do you have the CDs that came with the router and the adapter?  If you do, you can run the Router CD on your PC upstairs to configure the Router, and Run the adapter CD on the a610 to configure the adapter. If you don't have the CDs, I need the brand and model number of the wireless router, and the model number of the linksys adapter.  If you need help physically installing the card, let me know.

WRT54G

No. The same adapter should work. If it is USB try moving it to a different USB port. If it is internal then try reinstalling the CD that came with it.
