The backlighting function on my Garmin 176c GPS doesn't work. The unit seems fine otherwise. Can this be repaired?

I find it disapointing that Garmin will not repair a 5 year old device that wasn't cheap. I think that they are riding on their past success and no longer provide quality products or support.

    I'll replace it with Magellan!

Do not buy new device, because its quite cheaper to take it to the repair center and repair that short tracks in your gps as it will cost u very negligible and the problem is repairable for sure.as the device is out of warranty there is no risk if the warranty seal is broken.just be there when the technician is reparing because it will not take much time to find the faulty track of the back light and connect it to make the lights work properly.as some times the technician replace the orignal part of your device with the local duplicate part so please take care of this.the company garmin is not helping for the out of warranty products.

pls do rate the solution

thanks.

When backlight is blown the unit must be taken apart and replaced.

The repair can be done in local shop or at Garmin.

I believe Garmin is not supporting those legacy devcie that they have made for the past 3 years , meaning if a client has a bad devece from them but its already listed as a legacy device they wont support it anymore so the client can just get a new unit, good strategy but they are losing some client with that policy...

Need repair 176C GPS ok using plug power but battery damaged internal batt connection and will not turn on using int batt device is in NY buddy has few bucks & not wanting to buy new

I have done repairs to similar thing, what I have done, is get a "Pack" of batteries, with leads on them, similar to a cordless phone battery, but the same voltage as the ones the GPS uses, now, solder the wires onto the correct terminals. or the circuit board, make sure you rid every trace of corrosion too.Your good to go.

Looks like screen of 176C has been damaged---can still see it works

If the screen is already damage the only thing that can do here is to have the screen replace from the service center, so you can still use this unit...

Hope that helps...............

The GPSmap 176c does not turn on. I have put in new batteries and cleaned the metal parts of the battery receptors

Do you use rechargeable batteries? The 176C seems to be extremely picky about the voltage. I had the same problem. Afer changing to non-rechargeable batteries, everything works fine again. Not great for the environment, but for my bearings.

Will not power on

Did you use rechargeable batteries? The Garmin seems to be extremely picky about enough voltage. I had good rechargeables which I use in my foto flashlights, but they did not suffice for the Gamin. Simple non-rechargeable batteries ones solved my problem. Not good for the environment, but for my bearings...

Lost a setelite signal, how can we fix it? already reset

Update/Reload your unit's GPS and sytem software via Garmin page or use Web Updater. Your unit will be functioning again. This problem also occurs if you leave your unit on a dash board in a car and it is exposed to hight temperature.

Batteries last only 20 minutes?

NiMH batteries work on less voltage than Alkaline batteries, so the unit thinks the batteries are low when they are just the wrong type, put Alkaline batteries in {and turn off the backlight if possible} and you will get your 8 hours of use.

My 176c is not responding

get the download (updater from garmin website , download it then hook up 176c to computer and run file .if it doesnt go thru hit power and try again if you get the screen under a good light so you can see it will say downloading when this is done your screen will be back to normal .I dont remember if the unit is on when it beeps or off .try both ways if it doesnt work replace batteries as even though your not seeing the screen the unit is still on like i said ; fresh batts and try it and if it doesnt work hold down power key for a second or two and try again. good luck PS garmin doesnt know this i figured it out myself ...bob
