Can lexmark x4650 be set to recognize fax?

For more details on how to setup your Lexmark X4650 printer for faxing, please refer to the User's Guide found on the Lexmark website.
Additional info:If you have an answering on the same line as your fax:

To make sure the printer picks up incoming faxes, set Auto Answer to On, and then set the printer to pick up after a greater number of rings than the answering machine. For example, if the answering machine picks up calls after four rings, then set the printer to pick up after six rings. This way, the answering machine picks up calls first and your voice calls are received. If the call is a fax, then the printer detects the fax signal on the line and takes over the call.

If you have a voicemail feature associated in the same line as your fax:

Voice mail and fax can share the same telephone line if you subscribe to a distinctive ring service offered by your telephone company. This feature allows you to have multiple telephone numbers on one telephone line. Each telephone number has a designated ring pattern (single ring, double ring, triple ring, or double and triple ring). The different ring patterns let you know which telephone number was dialed, and which device you should use to answer the call.

If you do not have distinctive ring service, then set the printer to receive faxes manually (Auto Answer Off). This setting lets you receive both voice calls and fax calls, but works best if you use voice mail more often. You need to turn off voice mail whenever you are expecting a fax.

How to set fax machine so it can accept after 2 rings?

Distinctive Ring basicsDistinctive Ring service is an optional service available from many telephone companies. The Distinctive Ring service permits you to assign more than one telephone number to the same telephone line. Distinctive Ring allows you to use a single phone line for both voice and fax calls. You can assign a unique phone number and ring pattern for incoming fax calls. When a fax comes in, each telephone number makes a distinctive ringing sound, such as a single ring, double ring, or triple ring.
NOTE: The Distinctive Ring Service is the name HP and others use to describe this feature. Distinctive Ring is also known as:
  • Call Sign
  • Custom Ring
  • Ident-a-Call
  • Ident-a-Ring
  • Ident-a-Ring
  • Multi Ring
  • Personalized Ringing
  • Ringmaster
  • Smart Ring
  • Teen-Ring
The Distinctive Ring Service allows the HP product to work similarly to a dedicated fax line. If you connect an HP fax product and a telephone to one telephone line, you can assign one telephone number for fax calls and another for voice calls.
NOTE: You cannot send or receive faxes when the phone line is in use. Even if the HP fax product has a separate telephone number, it is still sharing the same phone line. Set the Distinctive Ring Service Using the menus on the product control panel, follow these steps to set a distinctive ring pattern. Step one: Turn on Auto Answer Turn on Auto Answer by pressing the Auto Answer button on the control panel. The button light indicates when Auto Answer is on.If the button light is already on, you do not need to press the button. Step two: Set the distinctive ring patternFollow these steps to change the answer ring pattern.
  1. Press the Setup button (c01461502.gif ) on the product control panel.
  2. Press the Right Arrow button (c01185072.jpg ) to select Advanced Fax Setup , and then press the OK button.
  3. Press the Right Arrow button (c01185072.jpg ) to select Distinctive Ring , and then press the OK button.
  4. Press the Right Arrow button (c01185072.jpg ) to select one of the following options:
    • All Rings
    • Single Rings
    • Double Rings
    • Triple Rings
    • Double & Triple Rings
  5. Press the OK button to select the option.
  6. Press the Back button (c01490920.gif ) to return to the main menu.
Now if you have anymore problems copy the link from below and paste it in your address bar and it will help you further with a document. Follow all the settings in the document and your fax should be setup, keep in MIND THAT THE RINGS TO ANSWER SHOULD BE 2,SO YOU CAN RECEIVE FAXES AFTER TWO RINGS

I can;t received faxes on my computer

Are you using DSL connection or Dial-up?
What OS are you using?

The fax line and voice line are using the same frequency so you should be able to fax directly from your pc fax modem when using Dial up connection but in DSL the data and voice are using different frequency. So in normal situations you wont be able to fax using DSL modem unless you use a separate fax machine.

However, if specified during the set-up of the DSL line, the signal can be separated so that some of the bandwidth is used to transmit an analog signal (for voice and fax) while the remaining bandwidth is used to transmit digital data. This allows for the use of the telephone or fax, and computer on the same line and at the same time. When inquiring about DSL with the service provider, specify the desire to use the phone line for voice or fax calls while connected through the computer to the Internet.

Reference the following setup options for using a DSL line with HP all-in-one or fax products.

CANNOT RECEIVE A FAX

Slim1234,
A multitude of problems might cause receive problems, and the User's Guide has no "receive Problems" section under troubleshooting - so here goes:

If I had to guess right off the bat, your problem is probably
that the FAX is in "FAX Storage" mode, and is out of memory.
In this mode, it will print FAXes until it runs out of memory.
See problem "g" below.

   a. Voice mail active on the line - if voice mail and FAX-2820 are
set to answer the line on the same number of rings, there's
no way to know which will answer first.

   b. Voice mail active on line - if voice mail is set to answer in
fewer rings than the FAX, then the FAX will always lose
(but you'll have no problems Xmitting).

   c. Call Waiting active on the line - the call waiting "boop" will
kill incoming FAXes (and outgoing FAXes too, but your
personnel will retry the outging ones until they succeed
and you may only hear complaints about incoming FAXes).

   d. Your FAX-2820 is set to "Manual" or "External TAD" mode.
Reset it to "FAX only" or "FAX/Tel" mode (depending on
your office use of the FAX telephone line).
How to do this: Menu/Set,0,1 <up/down to select mode>
                              press Menu/Set.
NOTE: your LCD display tells you your receive mode:
Mine says "Sleep 22:08 Fax", telling me I'm in "FAX only"
       mode, and its 10:08 PM.

   e. You've set the FAX to RING DELAY - if so, the FAX
must win. Setting ring delay to 00 tells the FAX to answer
the line silently (an advantage for a busy MD's office).
       How to change this: Menu/Set,2,1,1
       Ref: FAX-2820 User's Guide p.4-2

   f. You dont have a shared (FAX/human) line set to
"Easy Receive"; if someone answers the call and
Easy Receive is off, then they need to press START on
the fax machine front panel or dial *51 and hang up.
      How to change it: Menu/Set,2,1,3
      REF: Fax-2820 User's Guide p. 4-2

  g. You may be set up for "FAX storage."  In this mode, received
FAXes will be stored (and printed) until you run out of
memory (quickly done on a Brother FAX-2820), then you
get nada (but sending FAXes still works).
How to reset this: Menu/Set,2,5,1 <up/down>
      REF: Fax-2820 User's Guide p.6-2

  h. You may have set up FAX forwarding.  In this mode, sending
FAXes will work fine, but all incoming FAXes willl be sent
      to another telephone number.
How to turn it off: Menu/Set,2,5,1 <up/down>

If this laundry list of (sending OK, Receiving dead) scenarios
doesn't resolve the problem, email your FAX number to me
and we'll do some cross-country FAX debugging.

                                  [email protected]
P.S.
The above features may have been set remotely by a
nefarious (or somewhat knowledgeable) individual - remember
that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing (even for
FAXes). See (extensive) remote programming instructions
on p.6-6 of the User's Manual.

To print out the caller ID list - and possibly find out the
   source of the remote programming:
   Menu/Set,2,0,3 <up/down to "print report">, Menu/Set,
    Start, <Caller ID report prints>, Stop/Exit
