Question about NexxTech NSMODX2

1 Answer

Modem issue I bought a pc a few years ago and the modem worked fine. One day it eventually went out and I replaced it with an external usb modem. Couple of months later it began the same problem as the original: no dialtone; despite there being one. Replaced that modem with another and less than a month it developed the same issue. GOT ANOTHER ONE and three days later same thing. I have Windows XP w/ svc pack 2, the current modem is a Nexxtech USB external data/fax modem model NSMODX2. I have removed all other modems in the system. Everytime the modem fails and I replace it it connnects fine. Is there a possibility my motherboard is faulty?

A mother board is a big thing to replace. you may want to just buy another computer if thats the case. it may also be the way it hooks up. is it a card. if it's a card thta slot maybe shorting it out. if so try a diffrent slot. my best advice is move away from dial up all together.

generally a wireing issue or signal issue i assume by this time you have it fixed by the date. you can check 192.168.100.1 in a web browser and it should show the signals. if recieve is flashing then the downstream is either out of range or something else. it wont go to upstream until it locks onto downstream first.

External Nortel Modem won't connect

DSL uses one wire pair since it runs off a POTS line (plain old telephone service).

The Nortel modems are very old - they were some of the first DSL systems that came out almost 15 years ago. They were designed to work with their own proprietary Nortel back-end (DSLAM) equipment. Since they use proprietary and now way outdated transmission protocols, they will not work with modern DSL connections since they do not support the standard DSL protocols. Unless there was somekind of firmware upgrade I wasn't aware of, its pretty much junk.

Nortel went bankrupt a couple of years ago. I used to work for them and some of the guys who designed their DSL modems worked a few cubicles away from me. I had a couple of them in the early days (we got free DSL as beta testers back in the mid-90's) - the modems are useless now, but I found the power supply worked well with my cordless drill charger.

"USB external modem and an acer one

It should work fine as long as the external modem has a USB connection and drivers for the operating system you're running (Windows XP or Linux).

Zoom x6 modem disconnect

If you only get disconnected on the desktop, the problem is the desktop.

You can try removing network card from device manager and installing it back, try also logging in with a different user name and disabling eventual firewalls.

Fastest way to get rid of problems of this kind is by reinstalling windows, and if it does not work getting a replacement network card, or connecting the PC wireless.

If you have a spare wireless LAN Usb adapter, try connecting the PC on wireless.

Virgin broadband modem

You didnt explain about how you were connecting the desktop and through which....USB or Ethernet. You say you have no problems with the laptop most of us connect the laptop throught the USB port and our desktop through the ethernet the both connected to the modem. All you are having problems with is networking. If you open up the connection adapters looking first at the laptop one and confirming that the TCP/IP protocols are the same or should be. Copy the laptop one and place those protocols in the desktop adapter it must connect. It will complain to you if the address's is the same, use another number.

Can't get modem to work if I use the USB connection

Your computer is attempting to find the network connection through your LAN port. Your best bet is to reconfigure your network settings to seek its external network connection through USB, or better still, obtain a router(I personally recommend linksys wireless/basic routers due to stability), and simply use the ethernet connection through it. While this is bypassing the initial issue, it is also saving yourself a lot of hassle when it comes to retooling the PC's settings on the USB connection.
