My unit is 3 years old and has about 30 hours of running time on it. The engine runs perfect but the generator stopped working. I pulled the 4 bolts to the brushes and they were clean and the 2 contact points on the disc are also clean. I put an ohm meter on the disc and got no reading. I did find a winding wire sitting in the plastic cover that the brushes are housed in. The generator is stored in a covered area and it has a cover that fits on it like a bbq cover. I'm not sure if one winding wire would completely stop the flow of electricity. Your suggestions please. My email address is:

My answer:

I don't know how or where you stored your Genset there, but it the generator head got soaked with water and/or was subjected to constant moisture and/or worse case - saltwater exposure - then there's a 100% chance you have shorted out the windings and possibly burned out the stator!

There are a few things you can or should check on both the generator head and the engine if it has HIGH HOURS of runtime.

Namely the the BRUSHES on the generator head as I also don't know what normal LOAD you are putting on your Genset there, or have been putting on it previously, or at what RPM you are normally running the engine at - as to half throttle or full throttle setting??

The heavier the electrical LOAD the more heat the generator head had to dissipate as well. Is the generator venting clear and free from dust, dirt, and any obstructions?

I take it that it's most likely a Briggs & Stratton 4-stroke single cyl, or else it's a Honda 4-stroke single/twin cyl engine? Has it been serviced properly as well? Oil changes, air filter cleaned and/or changed out, fuel filter changed, Carb cleaned out periodically, etc etc etc.

These are just as critical so as not to burden the generator head output as well. If the generator head runs extremely HOT then you definitely have a problem there. Internal short, bad winding, etc.

Which brings me to the next point.

Since I take it that it has been running somewhat good up to now - I have a few ??'s as to how you have been running it recently, and how well it's been running generator-head wise?

Has the output voltage been really stable and clean up to this point or has it varied at lot?

Have you actually measured the AC output voltage with a good quality DVM set on the 200 volt AC scale? If so - what voltage was read? How stable was it - as to any notable variations?

Did you compare your DVM readings/findings to those listed in the Operator Manuals spec listed?

Btw - were any of the output outlets totally dead prior to the total output failure? Is so then it's not the breakers at fault. Not if the engine runs OK, and at the proper RPM settings as well.

Beings your Genset is probably an older model - it just indeed might have some high RUNTIME HOURS on it. If it does it just could very possibly be what sounds like to me (and I personally HAVE SEEN this happen myself firsthand) that the generator BRUSHES are nearly shot - as in almost worn out. Or in your case - TOTALLY GONE. If there is some brush length there, but not enough by spec then they may be getting way too hot - as from excessive current draw at point of contact, and thus the generator sensing circuitry itself is doing a complete electrical CUTOUT!!

An added protective Genset circuit feature in that the generator itself may indeed be linked to the engine as a type of REV LIMITER or CUTOUT on the Maintenance-free Magnetron® electronic ignition. Again - your operators or service manual should have a pretty good troubleshooting section in it unless you don't have that anymore or never got one if you bought it used to begin with.

If you unscrew & remove the Generator brushes, and they are indeed below the recommended length (or worse case they are indeed totally worn down) then that most likely is your problem right there. All rusting aside!

If you choose to replace the old brushes with new ones yourself - be very careful when seating the new ones - as to their insertion and cap retainer tightening. Never over-tighten those black plastic-like brush retainer screw caps - for if you break one (hard to get immediate replacements is why), or fracture one it could cause the Genset to fail under LOAD, and that very well could do some severe damage to the generator part itself. Take your time doing it, and be patient!!

It has to be one of the scenarios listed above, as I've covered every possible cause short of a broken or shorted wire somewhere - which in that case you will have to schematic trace and Ohm out wire to wire contacts. This being the least likely scenario from my experience.

Please post me a reply as to the found problem there, and the resolve to it by following my recommendations above. Also please rate my troubleshooting fix as well.

Keep me posted and I'll follow up as well.

Best regards,

I have had the same problem three times. All three times I had to replace the bridge rectifier board. This was on a 2006 model. I contacted the manufacturer and they told me that yuo can overload the generator without tripping a breaker ie: using more watts than amps. This board is also very sensitive to moisture which could build up under a cover in humid areas. Good luck.

GE Profile Harmony washer won't power up and trips gfi

Did you replace the inverter board?? It is inside the tan plastic box in the bottom of the control panel I think on the right side. That controls the power supply to a good part of the machine and drive system. Has to be a direct short somewhere to trip the breaker.

Control panel not lighting up or responding. Curcut breaker is ok

Are you sure you have power to the outlet dishwasher plugs into?
probably under sink or behind dishwasher. if so, I'd check the plug and cord.

I have a miller welder / Generator 225G plus that does not have any power output

These rigs are notorious for developing bad connections in switches and wiring, as well as getting stuck or burnt brushes in the generator. If it has been sitting for some time, I would definitely do maintenance on the brushes and check switches for rusty or burnt contacts.

No power when television is turned on

1) test the outlet box and plug a desk lamp if work, if does the circuit is o.k if NOT reset the c.breaker from your home
2) test the power cord for open or break
3) see for a blown fuse inside and replace, or c.breaker tripped reset.
4) test for short in transformer+coil+filter+diode+rectifier and ground chassin.
5) test the Horizontal output for +125vdc +HVREC+FLYBACK+vertical output for 80vdc+all they go to the CRT. measure the color circuite +12vdc+other circuite+12vdc+audio 24vdc. see the block diagram oTHERWISE you must to the repair shop TV
God bless you

Sony laptop dead problem

Could be many things. Let start with a couple of easy ones.1) Unplug charger from computer and outlet, take battery out press power for at least 30 sec. Plug every thing back power on. 2) charger bad won't turn on or charge battery, try diferent charger if don' know how to use a voltmeter. 3) power jack loose or broken. 4) last and worst mother board circuits transitors etc... btw processor, video card or input devices fried. Buy new board from ebay. Don,t fix it. Not worth it. This is Only if laptop gives completely sign of not turning at all. No lights, no hardrive or no working or fan. No signal of life. If couple of lights do turn on it can be the ram or video card, play with ram a bit. Good luck.

We just recently moved, and when we plugged in our dryer at the new house, nothing comes on. I cant even get the screen to light up, almost like the power source is dead. I checked the breaker on the house...

-Try difference outlet. If it works then the first outlet you plug in has no power.
-You said you already check the breaker. it looks fine.
-Did you do any thing to the breaker or just look...?
-If the outlet that you want to use still has no power then how about try this:
-Open the breaker panel. Flip all breaker off, then flip all on one by one and check again. If you have power now then good. But still have no power then most likely the previous owner or renter disconnect the wires to that outlet from its connector. At the junction box or may be at the breaker.

Good luck

Our GE Dishwasher just stopped all together. No power..nothing. All the fuses seem ok. Not sure why it just died. WIRES seem to be in tact..etc.

Ia the fuse blown? or the breaker tripped off? Must know if these are the problem. Plug in other small appliances in outlets in the kitchen to see if power is there. If not go to breaker box(usually in garage) check your sticker label and reset horizontal switch(curcuit breaker)back to on position. Note; sometimes these breakers can look like there on, if not sure switch off and on again. If you have power to outlets( INCLUDING WERE WASHER IS PLUGGED IN) you'r all set. Check the outlet where washer is plugged in, you may find a breaker built-in to it. The reset will be between upper & lower outlet, if so this needs to be pushed in.(most have tiny red button) Keep in mind the outlet might be defective. Never work on electrical untill you are sure that you have the right breaker OFF! If not sure call a professional! Good luck, best regards.

All circuit breakers good in box. have no power to 3 rooms on outlets or lights . problem started when using a hair dryer hooked too a drop cord in a outlet

the first thing that I would check is to see if there is a GFI outlet inline with the other outlets that are not working,, if there is one then check to see if you can reset it using the little reset button -- if by using the reset button does not fix this problem then there is the chance that the GFI outlet is bad and needs to be replaced. the next thing that comes to mind is that you said the breakers in the box are good, but I have seen sometimes where you need to flip the breaker totally off and then back on and this could reset the breaker. if you are still having troubles then the problem could be that one of the outlets in line has gone bad and needs to be replaced or the breaker in the box could also be bad ( use a meter to check that you have power on the output side of the breaker and trace from there from outlet to outlet until you find the bad one ) ---- could also be just a bad wire and while testing with your meter you should find it as you test the wires to the outlets.

Maytag M7Y15F2A-D A/C - won't turn on -long beep then nothing

The beeping might be an alarm that indicates the coils are iced over by too much humidity in the air...and/or the unit is overheating etc.
shut off power to the unit for a few hours, go out somewhere if it is too stuffy inside.. see if the unit operates better when you return... I also suggest not running these things constantly, this causes some units to ice up and **** up the power..
hope the unit does get replaced, newer ones are more efficient.

Treadmill shuts down and trip off the power outlet when you change the speed

outlet-breaker may be to lower for machine and or may be other things on same circuit lamps, refrigerator, fans etc try a different outlet with nothing else on circuit and at-lest 20 amp breaker ---if power is good than motor in threadmill might need servicing oil or adjustment
