If you're using a laser, note the result at the distance you need it and then spin the laser 180 degrees and check to see if results match.

Use a second measuring tool and compare the results, or you can measure a known size or length (floor tiles for example)and check the reading you get.

### Will tread depth of tires affect accuracy of nitestar dmi?

it will be absolute minimal and would be within the accuracy of the unit
as tread depth is around 3/8" on new tyres and is around 1/8 (legal) on worn tyres as you can see the difference is hardly worth mentioning
if the unit is measuring distance travelled then the shallower the tread depth the greater the chance of tyre slip when driving and that will affect accuracy

### Nowhere in the little operations manual that came with my watch does it give the accuracy of the timepiece. Where can I get that information? I have a movado ESQ bracer chronograph.

Interesting question. I know little about watches but, as you would know, your watch does have a quartz movement, so, from Wikipedia, 'Quartz clock':

Standard-quality resonators of this type are warranted to have a long-term accuracy of about 6 parts per million at 31 degrees C (87.8 F): that is, a typical quartz wristwatch will gain or lose 15 seconds per 30 days (within a normal temperature range of 5 deg C / 41 F to 35 deg C / 95 F) or less than a half second clock drift per day when worn near the body.

If a quartz wristwatch is "rated" by measuring its timekeeping characteristics against an atomic clock's time broadcast, to determine how much time the watch gains or loses per day, and adjustments are made to the circuitry to "regulate" the timekeeping, then the corrected time will easily be accurate within 10 seconds per year. This is more than adequate to perform celestial navigation.

Assuming that you have a computer with internet-synced time and good internet, meaning around 1/100 second accuracy, why not compare the watch to the computer over the space of a week?

### How do you ensure the vernier scale is accurate on a pi tape?

Hello. Ensuring accuracy with a new unit should not be necessary. All Pi-Tape pruducts are:

"delivered with a Calibration Report traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology and all calibrations are performed in accordance with ANSI/NCSL Z540-1-1994, ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 10012-1, MIL-STD 45662A and 10CFR, part 21."

If the unit is second hand, the only real way to ensure accuracy is to verify the unit with a second calibrated vernier, or actually have it calibrated. Pi-Tape has a calibration lab. The link to contact them is: http://www.pitape.com/contactus.htm

Lots of other good info here as well. Hope this helps out.
