Its located in the upper right corner of freshfood side. sometimes its hard to get to. remove light shield, then heat shield, then the auto damper housing assy. and then 2 scews holding the defrost board, remove the 4/6 wire plug to board carefully. also unplug refridgerator first. good luck.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
This is an automatic defrosting problem. You can get few days (2 - 3) of normal temps by doing a manual defrost. Unplug the unit..empty the freezer contents and direct and external fan into the freezer compartment for just over 2 hours while it makes a water mess. (Mop ready!) Then plug the unit back in. It will operate normally for 2 to 3 days before icing up again due to the automatic defrosting system problem you currently have.

There are 3 components that can cause the problem:
1. Defrost control Item 13 this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=47966&diagram_id=28494314#d28494314
2. Defrost Heating Element Item 12 this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=47966&diagram_id=28494316#d28494316
3. Defrost thermostat or thermistor (depending on model) Resistance is measured for 240 K ohms above 60 deg F and lower resistance below 60 F. It is part of the defrost heater assembly item 12 above. (Line 2)
Detailed view of the defrost heater and thermostat is here:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/Appliance-Parts/whirlpool-defrost-heater-assembly-item-number-ap4069923.aspx

The wiring diagram is here:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/frame_diagram.aspx?diagram_id=28494324&pkw_=basket&model_id=47966&NewWindow=1
You can test the defrost heater by reading the Yellow wire to White / Black on the adaptive defrost control board. (unit unplugged)
The thermostat can be tested by making sure the temp control is on / unit should be in a it should be running situation BUT the unit is UNPLUGGED / below 60 F ... then read the Red wire to the White / Black wire at the adaptive defrost control for Very low resistance.
If the Defrost heater and thermostat check out fine... then the problem is the adaptive defrost control.
Just a note.....about powering up;. Once the unit is unplugged you must wait 15 minutes before re-powering the unit so the coolant system will stabilize and the compressor will start normally.
That is pretty much the basics of troubleshooting to identify the failure.
Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

MZD2766GES No cooling.Stat(slide) set to call.120v to unit.Lights on.No compressor operations.Manually defrost last few months.

Lets check start relay, run capacitor and thermostat. Also need you to pull away from the wall and unplug, remove cover over compressor and then feel the top of the compressor to see if warm or too hot to keep hand there. Should you need a start relay you will need=> 12002784 Relay and Overload Kit

sea_breeze_140.jpg

12002784 Relay and Overload Point and Click Parts If the compressor is cool I want you to check the Adaptive Defrost control=> 12002104 Adaptive Defrost Control Sometimes these parts act like the compressor start relay and stop compressor and fans and even sometimes one or the other. The thermostat should also be checked while unplugged with an OHM meter=> 61005327 Temperature Control Here is a pdf with the locations and should you have any questions I will be here again later, Thanks Sea Breeze

Temp is going up in both the fridge and the freezer droor

First place to look is the freezer and see if frost is building up on rear wall. If yes unplug and begin manual defrost. I am almost sure your has a Adaptive Defrost Control on the inside control panel where you set temperatures and if bad will set this problem into causing no defrost and having ice blocking air flow. I need to give many reasons for you to look for but it is what I do on service calls. Because your model has Adaptive Defrost Assembly Click Here=> 61005988 there is a higher possibility that it is defective and not allowing defrost. On link below it is photo #13 on that page. You will need to enter the control panel through the fresh food section above the top shelf. Please let me know what you find so we may move checking for something different like fans, start relay or run capacitor. Frig side not working on Maytag MZD2766GEW

freezer not defrosting. probably adaptive defrost board in fridge.
take panel off freezer (inside, back panel). if all frozen, can defrost with blow dryer. best to remove fridge control panel (inside, top of fidge). access adaptive defrost board, jump test to f1 (i think) next to test. this should initialize defrost mode. buy new board.

FREEZER KEEPS WORKING NOT REFRIG

Yes, the defrost thermistat turns the element of when temps reach about 50 degrees F. The adaptive defrost tell the fridge to go into defrost. When the ice melts the defrost thermistat turns the element off.Whe can check the defrost thermistat if you like.
Your refrigerator has a adaptive defrost board inside the fresh food compartment hiding behind the control panel. That would be the first thing to consider that may be bad. But you also said you manually defrosted the refrigerator and it began doing this again about a month later. Take the model number and enter it in the search feature for model at it will take you to a page so we can look at the same refrigerator and work together to fins the answer. Below is a link click on that to look over your model. The adaptive defrost part number is 61005988
Let me know when you are ready, Thanks, Sea Breeze

It is also possible the defrost thermostat is defective or a problem with a defrost element. Did you cange both element whith new defrost thermistat? Part number 61006199

Not cold

Inside the fresh food compartment there is an adaptive defrost control. If it is bad it will cause the evaporator coils to freeze and reduce cold air circulation throughout your refrigerator. You can unplug your refrigerator and remove the control panel as to view the board. Sometimes you will see burn marks but not always. You also can while unplugged remove the back panel in the freezer compartment to see if ice is present and if so you can defrost the ice and examine the defrost heater to make sure that it is ok. The part number for your adaptive defrost assembly is 61005988
I am using the model number above your post so please correct me if wrong. Model number MZD2766GES
Go to link below, they offer free help and assistance.
Enter model number in the model and parts search feature. Thanks, Sea Breeze
When you get to the model page on left click picture #2 controls
