Cold weather and batteries in a digital camera are a frustrating combination ...

It is well known that cold weather and batteries in a digital camera are a frustrating combination - you can almost hear a giant sucking sound as the batteries' enegry is drained away. My question is this: Do the batteries actually drain away quicker in cold weather, or does the cold simply make it harder for the digital camera to use the 'cold' enegry. In other words, once inside a warm environment, do the batteries work properly again because of the 'thawing'?

Unfortunately, rechargeable lithium AAs aren't likely to come to pass. The lihtium ion chemistry required for safety reasons insists on putting out ~3.6V, which is of course way out of spec for the AA format. I believe that the newer lithium polymer chemistries also put out 3+ volts. With improper charging, say in a charger designed for NiMH AAs, older lithium chemistries were subject to explosion or the release of burning molten lithium metal--something that could easily ruin your whole day, not to mention your foot.

Lithium batteries are superior to anything else in the cold. I have a 3030 that I use penlight lithiums in. Also lithiums don't drain themselves on the shelf - not even rechargeable ones. And they have no memory. Now if they only made penlight lithiums that are rechargeable . . .

Batteries depend on chemical reations to produce power, in the cold reactions go slower. I've seen the battery indicator on my GPS unit go from full to nearly empty and back to nearly full again by starting inside, going for a hike in cold weather, then come back inside. The GPS ran for hours with the indicator at nearly empty, but it draws very little current.

Stop using this camera (Olympus FE-210), warn all your friends and relatives about this piece of junk, send the camera back to Olympus COD. Take the money you save from not buying more batteries for this camera and buy a decent camera from a reputable manufacturer.

My Kodak ZD710 Will only let me take about 11 pics and the batteries go dead, I have used the CRV3 battery pack

Welcome to FixYa.

Kodak lithium digital camera battery CRV3 (non-rechargable) approximately can take pictures up to 500 pictures. However, actual life may vary based on the usage.

How to extend your battery life?

1. Use power saving features (using a power saving modes). Limit activites such as reviewing pictures/videos on the LCD.
2. Dirt on the battery contacts can affect battery life. Wipe the contacts with clean, dry cloth before loading the battery in the camera.
3. Battery performance is reduced at temperatures below 41 F(5 degree celcius). When using your camera in cold weather, keep spare batteries warm. Do not discard cold batteries; when they return to room temperature, they may be usable.

Please let me know if you have any questions and if this solution was helpful.

I have a lumix camera and whenever it's cold it has me turn on and off the camera for a good 5 minutes or more before it stays on, and even then it zooms in all the way and won't take pictures

How cold is cold? These point and shoot type cameras with the metal housings just do not like cold because the metal contract in the cold and makes every moving part harder to move also the lubricant gets sticky adding more difficult. Batteries in cold weather suffer rapid loss of power as well compounding the problem. In film days I'd shoot below zero but have to be careful not to snap the film when winding, Digital cameras "semi pro and professional" I can get down to about 46 F before they start getting upset batteries start first in lack or loosing power. Below this I swap batteries in and out keeping sets in my inside pockets Coldest I've shot is -5F and the camera was only in the real cold for eight minutes. Now a point and shooter with the integral lens I'd just guess that anything below 45F would be asking a bunch and the actual operating temperature for your camera is between 32 and 104 F also I think your camera has a vibration reduction or image stabilizing system which when cold will do two things **** the life out of any battery and cause damage to the motor driving the stabilizer. My Moultrie camera turns itself off. i have set it numerous times and when i go back to check it for pictures, the power is off. the batteries are showing 99% so its not the batteries??

Don't know what causes it, but I have 2 cams that are doing the same thing. Batteries are 95%. Don't know if has anything to do with cold weather. Haven't had this problem in the past.

Battery life has shortened considerably, whats the problem

Batteries lose capacity with age. Eventually they fail altogether. Might be a good time to get a spare.

Canon say this camera gets about 600 shots per charge at 68 degrees Fahrenheit, dropping to about 450 at 32 degrees, so cold weather can be a factor. Also using the flash a lot can reduce the number of shots by a third or more. As winter approaches, both cold weather and more frequent use of flash are likely (gets dark earlier).

I have a cannon Power Shot A75, i have an image problem, i left it out in the cold weather in the car and now it will not work. it is fixable or not is the question. and where do i send it to.

The cold weather may have just accelerated and made apparent an already existing problem. This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager, and is a known defect for your particular model camera.. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free if you live in the US, Canada, and a select few other countries. If you live outside the US, contact Canon support for your country to see if they'll still honor the advisory (some still will, especially if you stress you knowledge that this is a known defect of the camera). They may also include free shipping both ways (free shipping varies with countries). This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please see this link for more info.

Affected cameras with this problem include: A60, A70, A75, A80, A85, A95, A300, A310, S1 IS, S60, S400, S410, S500, SD100, SD110, IXUS V2/V3/300/400/430/500/II/IIs, IXY Digital 200a/300a/320/400/450/500/30/30a

Batteries do not last but a very few pictures. Even rechargeable ones drain very fast

In DSCW7 Camera, you can use NH-AA-DA (Ni-MH) batteries (this is the supplied one) or Alkaline batteries.
With the LCD screen on, you can capture upto 190 minutes when using the supplied Nickel metal hydride batteries.
When using the Alkaline batteries, the life is only for 35 minutes.
This is a normal operation of the Camera.

The actual battery life will vary depending on how the camera is operated and what functions and types of batteries are used; using zoom and flash frequently will shorten the battery charge.

The average recording time of the battery as listed on the packaging will vary due to several different factors, including ambient temperature and the power consumption of the camera. The battery package states the power consumption specification needed to achieve the average recording time. If the camera power consumption is more than the specification on the battery packaging, the average continuous recording time will be lowered.

Also, batteries discharge faster when used in cold weather conditions. In cold environments, it is recommended that batteries be kept in a warm place before using. Sometimes batteries may recover some power if they are warmed up after being in the cold.

When using alkaline batteries, do not mix new batteries with used batteries. Doing so may reduce the battery life.

V1003 camera won't focus since exposure to cold weather

I hope that it will solve the issue, but the alternative is a repair.
You should also try and dry the unit. Place the camera a dry and warm place as "open" as you can make it. (Take out the battery and SD card and keep the hatch open) and keep it there for at least a couple of days.

Please also try to upload new firmware
Connect the camera with the computer.
Turn the camera on.

Took a picture in cold snowy weather

I have read that weather conditions do affect batteries. If you haven't already done so, might I suggest that you replace or recharge the batteries. Also ensure that you have got the correct batteries as per the camera's user manual.
Failing that, it could well need a visit to the repair shop.

Hope this helps

How cold is too cold for the S730?

Take the camera inside and let it warm up to room temperature. Get another set of brand new batteries. But first take out the batteries and let it sit for an hour. Without any power it can reset itself. The mini cpu inside is thinking its too cold and won't let it come on. After the one hour of sitting, put the new batteries in it and try to power it up. Cold weather can kill a brand new set of batteries in a matter of minutes. You should try not using your camera when its below freezing.
