Kevin, it seems like the keyboard is bad on your laptop. If it has an extended warranty you should take it in for repair.

Did something spill on it recently or did it fall? Sometimes bumps or falls can cause connections to become loose and malfunction.

To gain access to your computer you can try a usb keyboard.

You may want to just replace the keyboard since they only cost in the $30 range. Do a google search on acer aspire 5517 keyboard.
