Plumbers Putty is used under the Sink Stopper Strainer Flange (pop up valve) that drains the water from the sink. Stainless Steel Sinks usually gets a rubber washer under the Sink Stopper Flange to keep water from leaking under the stopper flange and below the sink. Plumbers Putty will work on metal sinks also.

Anything sitting on top the countertop, or the sink top flanges (where the faucet sits on), gets Kitchen/Bathroom Silicone or Acrylic Caulk to keep water out from underneath the Faucet Base, Spray Wand Base and Soap Dispenser flanges. Again, you can use Plumbers Putty but it may stain so the better way to go is caulking. http://www.ehow.com/how_12097892_apply-plumbers-putty-faucet-deck-plates.html

Putting Caulk around the perimeter of the faucet base assures water never makes it under there. This way it stops the water before it gets under the base flanges. Plumbers Putty sits under the flanges/bases and it eventually gets hard, brittle and cracks so you never know (see) if water is actually getting under the base and mixing with the putty because it's hidden.

The best defense is caulking all the flanges that touch the counter top, even around the sinks perimeter that sits on the countertop.

Hi seawitch678,

If you have a granite or stone countertop/sink, use silicone as plumber's putty will stain the stone. Plumber's putty is petroleum based so it will not adhere to stone. Normally you should use what the manufacturer recommends and where they recommend. When installing a faucet, put either around the base of any piece that goes through the countertop.

Hope this helps. If it does, I'd appreciate your vote. Thanks,

Handie Andie

I have the Whirlpool Quiet Partner III. It was installed new in July 2007. It is/was used on a regular-basis once a week. Dishwasher was running normally until 5-22-11. Now at end of a full cycle,...

Make sure your water temperature is hot enough to dissolve the soap. Generally, the water temp. should be 140 degrees. Run some hot water at the tap before you turn on the dishwasher. This will assure that hot water is in the dishwasher as soon as you start it. Be certain that there aren't any large pieces in front of the dispenser tray. Sometimes casserole dishes, frying pans or baking pans can block the door and prevent it from opening.
Also, the sprayer arms might be clogged with bone fragments, peelings, bits of paper, etc. If this is the case, you'll need to remove the sprayer arm, flush and then check the jets. If you see "stuff" in the jets, they can be remove with tweezers.
Finally, make sure the upper sprayer arm hose is securely seated with the tube in the back of the dishwasher that carries the water up to the sprayer arm hose. If these two are not seated correctly, the water will not travel into the sprayer arm hose, the sprayer arm will not turn and your dishes will not get clean! I hope this helps. If it does, please come back to Fixya and rate my advice.

Installed brand new marielle kitchen faucet with matching srpay and soap... sprayer is not working. please help

If you used the teflon tape to seal the threads on the sprayer connection. Make sure the tape is has not blocked the line.
Check for any kinks in the hose and it is not pinned against something.

Turn on the cold water and hold the sprayer over the sink and activate.
If nothing happens while still holding the sprayer move from cold water to hot. If still no water there maybe something in the line preventing the sprayer from receiving water.

Highly doubt there is anything mechanically wrong but it has happened before. See if you can swap it for a new one.

Good luck!
