The horsepower should be listed on the nameplate (left) of the pump motor (in very tiny letters - hp). If the motor nameplate is burnt or worn off, sometimes a part number of the impeller (right) can tell us which hp your pump motor is.

How do I tell what horsepower wet end pump do I need on my eon spa

Use the information on the motors label.
many times the horsepower and the service factor are not visible because it is intentionally left off. Use the code number or the model number to identify the horsepower with the manufacturer.

I have an 11 year old Jacuzzi Magnum Force 1227 pool pump model 15UMFS. I want to replace it, but don't know how many horsepower it is. Can you tell me?

Probably 1.5 HP but if you can read any of the nameplate data on the motor it would be helpful to confirm. A better approach might be to size the new pump to the volume of water in the pool.

If all you are going to replace is the pumps motor then can you provide at least the amp ratings off the motor? Those should help verify what your old unit's horsepower really is.

I have a older spa with a Sta Rite pump motor. Without removing the damaged pump I was able to see the model number of the pump through a mirror. I beleive it reads K48M5A3, is there any way that you can...

That would definitely be the model number. The K indicates Capacitor start and run, the 48 indicates the frame size, and the "M" indicates horsepower (1.5 hp, in your case). If your replacing the motor, make sure you get the same Horsepower and Service Factor ratings. Hope this helps. If you need further assistance post a reply in the comments, and don't hesitate to leave a good thumb rating if you found this helpful. Thanks, and good Luck!

Thank you for posting your question here on

No one can answer that for you without knowing information about the actual installation. In short, you can not lower the horsepower without dropping the load. If reducing the speed of the pump lowers the load enough you could then use a smaller drive motor but the pump will deliver less product as a result. Using a pump curve you should be able to calculate the reduced head from slowing the unit down and the horsepower required at that point of the pump curve. Size the motor accordingly. As a rule though, I doubt you could drop to half the horsepower and still operate the pump on its curve. You may need to put a 2 hp on it.

Air Compressor question

No, When an air compressor is built, it requires a motor or engine to power the process of producing air. The horsepower is not the only component of the equation. It has to be combined with the compressor pump that it runs to produce the air needed. The bigger the horsepower does not necessarily mean more air. Remember to keep your required cfm in mind. Horsepower does not make you work more efficiently, but horsepower working in unison with a quality pump that produces enough cfm for your needs. Make sure when shopping that you look for the running horsepower and not the peak horsepower you get at startup. Some manufacturers have falsely advertised or implied the peak horsepower to be the normal run horsepower. At start-up, there is a surge of power needed to start the motor and can be 1.5-3 times the amount of running power needed. This means the horsepower need for the motor peaks as well, but then drops back down to normal. Many of these manufacturers are involved in a class-action lawsuit for misrepresentation. They have used man’s machismo of “the more horsepower, the better” to their advantage to make sales. These aren’t cars we’re talking about!
