The heater starts and heats up bu then will "explode" like a small gas cannon, it does this several time and the heater exhaust is hot but the water does not get hot.

Always when this type of symptom occurs and reported to our service dept, technician will check for
  • proper gas pressures on each side of the gas valve, on and off.
  • Checking for manifold pressure, static, and if any pressure drops, to ensure all is within mfg'rs spec's.
If not, then correction req'd, and this normally rectifies problem.
Then we check for
  • proper water flow and Temperature Rise/Differentiation between inlet/outlet of water at heater front header.
    • If not within mfg'rs spec's, again correction (normally an internal bypass has failed or the Unitherm Governor did), once corrected, this type of reported problem goes away.
  • At minimum, thorough cleansing of filter, is a good thing as well for proper heater operation.

Can I wire my heater to my pool pump timer. I want power to the heater only when my pump is running.

If your heater is operating properly, it will not heat if your pump is not running. But you can connect it to your timer also. How you do it will depend on what type of time you have, Which model of heater you have. If you have your manual, you can find wiring examples for your heater.

Hi My raypak heater is saying rol service what does this mean? I'm having guests over tonight and need the hotub working.

You haven't indicated what model number heater you have. .
FLAME ROLL-OUT SAFETY SWITCH
Low NOx heaters are equipped with a thermal cut-off
device to prevent flame roll-out in the event the heat
exchanger becomes blocked. It is a "manual reset"
type roll-out switch that must be reset by a service
technician after any over-temperature conditions have
been fixed. Excessive restriction in the heat exchanger
flue passage may cause the switch to disable the heater. Some models have a one time "fuse type" switch, that once opened has to be replaced. You can go to www.raypak.com for a manual if you don't have one.

What is the most common type of failure on pool

Most heaters today are built to high standerds. I would have to say the greatest problem with heaters is heat exchanger falure generally due to poor control of chemicals. People will get comfortable with a routeen or have a chlorinator mounted in the wrong spot. Once this damage is done it's done. I will usually go with the lightest heater since I have to carry it, you may very well want to go with the best price.
Hayward or Pentar are probally my favorites due to the footprint and ease of install. The big thing is to take care of your chemicals or look into stanless steel heat exchangers. Cost is a big problem with these and they are generally used in commercial work.
I hope this has been helpful and good luck.
