MIG stands for Metal Inert Gas welding, many times called Wire-feed.. Also referred as GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding). The "Metal" refers to the wire which is what is used to start the arc. It is shielded by inert gas and the feeding wire also acts as the filler rod. A semi-automatic process, it is fairly easy to learn and use.

MIG welding is the term used for Metal Inert gas, where the gas is Argon and used for Aluminium Welding, The gas has no effect on the arc apart from shieling the weld bead for outside atmosphere, MAG welding is Metal Active gas where to gas does have an effect on the arc and is common with welding mild steel etc. the gas is argon with an acitive gas such as CO2 or Oxygen in different amounts. A contiuous wire feed system fed from a 1lb reel or a 15 kl reel of wire.of 0.8mm upto 1.6mm dia wires the larger 400amp can feed cored wires giving very high metal transfer.

SOURCE: how to control welding spatterin MIG?

If wire feed is to fast the wire will spatter rather than weld and stick.CO2 burns hotter than 75/25cooler,100 even cooler.I find that spraying anti spatter befor on area to weld doesn't work for me.Also:Dirt in the nozzle can may short the flow of electrons through nozzle opening

I have a mishto 220 mig tig mma I can get the arc to work fine but the mig there's no arc at all the machine sounds like its welding but no arc at the gun I'm using gassless wire I thought it may be an...

They told me at welding school the mig transformer has a different slope (whatever that means?) to the tig and mma transformer so I am a little surprised at your question. The implication is two transformer are needed for the three types of welding and for tig and mig a dc converter and also for dc mma welding.

From your description it seems as though welding current is not arriving at the tip of the mig torch or the current is arriving in the wrong form.
You say the mma is fine but you didn't say whether it is fine on ac welding, dc welding or both. I have not tried mig welding with ac and have no idea whether it would be successful but I imagine a lot of sparks and not much welding. The problem could be the rectifier unit is either not working or is switched out of the circuit.

Polarity is important too with dc tig and mig welding.

I hope this provides food for thought.

Welding troubleshooting

You could pass voltage but no welding current if the current carrying cable inside the mig gun has a break in it. Inside the mig gun is a braided copper current passing cable, if it only has a few strands of wire to complete the circuit it will not pass weld current. They usually break where the mig gun has been flexed over time.

Hobart 140 voltage drop when welding in all setting using 30 wire and uni mix gas will start out welding good then will not ?????

Check your input line voltage. 115 volt Mig welders / plasma cutters need stable voltage / current. Test to see if the voltage drops to below 100 volts when welding. If so, find a more stable power supply.

Mig problem

For certain type of work TIG is required, like welding chrome moly for some racing organizations. Intricate work, like gunsmithing is also well suited to TIG. TIG is used by many auto restorers who prefer a more precise, perfect finish that requires little to no finish work. TIG is most similar to gas welding in technique, so if you've done oxy-fuel welding, TIG should be a natural transition. MIG is required by law and by insurance companies in many localities for structural repair of automotive frames. MIG is also much easier to learn and faster to weld. For doing other types of welding, like sheet metal, it can be a matter of personal preference. For an auto body repair shop or a novice welder, a MIG is a good, practical all-around welder.
