A bench grinder is a very simple tool. The units are usually listed as 6-inch or 8-inch wheel models, and the 8-inch units are typically a bit more powerful, and subsequently more expensive. A 6-inch model will usually be powered by a 1/2 HP motor, where the 8-inch will be larger, likely 3/4 HP. Two very useful features to look for are a mounted work light, which will directly illuminate your work, and an adjustable rest, which functions much like the tool rest on a lathe. Strongly consider models which have both features. Many also include a clear, see-through spark guard, which will help keep any sparks from flying toward your face. A word of caution, though: such a guard does not replace safety goggles.

Cummins model C-140 Bench Grinder. Can I get an owners manual please?

There is a similar one on eBay, but no free ones. Cummins are known for diesel engines rather than grinders, which means someone else made it and put a Cummins badge on it. Take your pick from any of these.

They don't need much of a manual anyway, most of the content is on safety. Press switch to turn on and off, one arbor is right hand thread, the other is left hand thread.

No control of speed on bench grinder, need schematic

Unless the motor is a brush type universal unit, there is commonly no way to change the speed of an induction motor. There are AC motor speed control units available, but cost more than the grinder as they change the frequency as well as the voltage. There are speed controllable grinders available that use brushes so that simple electronics can control speed. Hope this helps!

The motor just sits there and buzzes, when there isn't any electicity bearings turn freely

There is a short internally in the motor. IMO not worth repairing, new bench grinders are pretty inexpensive.

Delta 23-880 bench grinder

You should be able to hold the grinding wheel with a pair of leather gloves on your hands and lossen the bolt. Look very carefully at the threads to make sure you are trying to lossen and not tighten. Some are left handed threads on bench grinders.

Bench Grinders Objects

our bench grinder can be used to keep your chisels, knives, gouges and other similar cutting tools sharp, which every woodworker knows is vitally important. Also, bench grinders are handy for sharpening lawn mower blades, drill bits, gardening shears and more. Additionally, a bench grinder can be used for honing and shaping metal objects when modifications are needed. For instance, perhaps you need to modify a door hinge to make it fit in a certain application. No tool is better for this task than a bench grinder.

Bench Grinders Usage

Grinding is the fastest way to deburr a sharp corner or dress the end of threaded rod or bar stock that's been cut to length. Fit a grinder with a wire wheel, and you have a handy tool for removing rust. Then switch to a buffing wheel and you're ready to polish metal to a mirrorlike sheen. But for most of us, grinders are essential for shaping and sharpening hardened tool steel and high-speed steel.

Precision work question

Bench grinders aren't designed for precision work. In fact, they're really freehand tools that rely on a good eye and careful touch. And while you can take some tools, like drill bits or turning tools, right from the grinding wheel to the work, it's common for grinding to be a relatively coarse, preliminary shaping procedure, followed by careful honing on a whetstone.

Grinder Types

Bench grinders are perfect for sharpening cutters, bits, blades and hand tools. Any piece that needs smoothing, shaping, or polishing can be done at the bench grinder. Straight grinders or angle grinders are portable, handheld tools with wheels that range from 4 to 9 inches. They are the best grinders for working on pieces that may be too large to fit at a bench.
