Over a period of time deposits such as grease, fat, silt and mineral scale build up on the pipe walls. This accumulated material makes the wall rough reducing the ability of the drain to rapidly move the water it contains. As the water flow slows more materials are deposited worsening the situation.

Tip

Slow shower drain fix.

This tip will show you how to fix a slow tub drain. In my experience most slow shower and tub drains are caused by hair. Usually within reach of a wire hanger. Since you probably do not have all the proper tools, you must be careful not to damage your drain line.

The trickiest part with most shower drains, is the pop up assembly. Most times the hair is caught on the pop-up components. If you have a pop-up, check with your local hardware guy to show you how it works and is assembled. On a pop-up, you'll have to take the drain plug/cap off. have the cap in up position, and get your eyes below the cap rim, you will see a small set screw, a couple turns and cap should come off, do not take set screw all the way out. If you see hair on assembly after taking assembly out, remove the hair and run some water to see how your drain is working. If that does not fix your slow drain, you should stop there and call a plumber, because that means you blockage is further down the line then you'll be able to reach.

If you have no pop-up assembly. Untwist hanger, make as straight as possible, then with a pair of needle nose or any pliers you have, go about a half inch in from the hook side. Make a U bend, about the same size and shape of the end of a paper clip. Go in drain a inch and turn hanger in a circle trying to catch the hair blockage. Twist a couple times and pull back gently, do not push hanger in to far, you might break your pipe or the hanger may get caught in the p-trap or even worse drum-trap,(older houses tend to have drum-traps, I suggest not to even attempt to clear any blockage were a drum-trap is involved, call a plumber)

If its hair, you will see this black sludge looking hair ball that may make you sick. Don't worry you'll be happy when all is said and done, and you can shower without standing in your own filth. If its not hair, you probably have a more serious problem. Call a plumber and make sure your plumber gives free estimates.

Dishwasher wont completely drain

Sounds like the drain is plugged up. What have you tried so far?
The easiest way to fix it is to use a shop vac and try to pull the " gunk" out that way.
The next solution is to try a dishwasher cleaner. These come in liquid or tablet form. You just put them in the dishwasher ( no dishes ) and run a full cycle. It should break up the "build up ".
If those ideas don't work, you'll need to take the covers off the bottom of the dishwasher. These are generally found at the very back...they cover the pump area so that cutlery, large items of food, etc can't slide down.
These can usually be taken off with a small wrench, pliers, or socket wrench.
Once these are off, you should be able to see what's causing the blockage.
If all these fail, the problem may be further down the line...especially if you start having toilet and sink issues.

Water pressure is intermitant switch does not come on

Not sure what switch you are talking about.
Problems with water pressure are quite often caused by calcium and lime buildup inside of the faucet/machine. CLR can help. If it's a faucet, try removing the end of the spout and replacing the small metal screen at the end of it.
If you're talking about a washing machine, try removing the hose and seeing if there is a blockage. I'm not sure how to answer this question, as you haven't mentioned what you are actually having problems with.

Flotec 1/4 Horsepower Sink Pump System slow to drain. Seems clogged on the sink side of the pump. Can I use Drano or clorox or will that damage the rubber and plastic parts int he pump?

hi, draino and all those sorts of products only make it worse they will help the blockage solidify best way is to run hot water through the system even if it is boiling water from the kettle and a little bit of a pump with a plunger should do the trick

Kitchen sink clogged up , ran a roto rooter that you buy at the stores through the outside access and nothing happened. did the plunger thing on the sink and again its still backed up. I thought that...

Check the traps on the sink for clog and maybe if it has a turn in the wall it may be clooged .

You can disassemble the drain under sink and try and auger there.

Or if you can get acces to an air tank you can make up a fitting to screw on drain under sink and put air on it to try and free blockage.

Every 3 months we are having to rod our drains what seems to be a blockage .We live on the end of a row of 5 houses we noticed after clearing blockage the water didn,t really drain away very quickly we...

I know if the problem is due to waste back-draining you may need a more powerful pump and a check valve installed in front (Pit-side) of the uphill pipe. This is not a real bad job to do if you are somewhat mechanically inclined. I would start by locating the pipe and uncovering it to see what is present. Even if you have a check valve installed I would replace it! I hope this helps if I can be of any more assistance let me know!

Respectfully,

Blockage Maintenance

# Regularly remove any hairs that get trapped in the waste plug hole. # Keep small objects such as combs, medicine bottles and toilet rolls away from places where they could accidentally fall into the toilet. # Regularly flush the wash basin and bath or shower pipe work with hot water and a disinfectant to clear soap residue and prevent build up over time. # Don’t flush away large and disposable items such as sanitary towels, nappies or product wrapping as they can become caught in the drainage pipe. # Do not dispose of waste food scraps and cuttings down the kitchen sink. These are much better composted. If any items do fall into the sink pull the vegetable material out of the plug hole, do not try to poke through as you could impact the blockage making it harder to remove. # Never dispose of cooking fats down the drain system. As they hit cold water they will solidify. If there is absolutely no alternative you should dilute and emulsify the fats by mixing them with hot water and of detergent. Keep the water running for a minute after you have done this to keep a clear water flow. # For complete peace of mind, particularly if you are running a business you can request a regular drain surveys and get your drainage system checked regularly by a CCTV drain inspection service. This will give early warning of any potential blockages and also enables you to keep an eye on the structural condition of the drainage pipe work.

Blockage Repair

If a blockage does occur, then having something to hand to deal with it may save you time, money and inconvenience. A medium-sized hand plunger should cope with most blocked sinks. You should also have a spanner of the correct size to remove the trap underneath the sink. A set of drain rods should be sufficient to clear most blocked private sewers. If a blocked private sewer cannot be cleared by your use of the drain rods, then you will probably need the services of a sewer cleansing specialist.
