By decreasing or increasing the RMS voltage and hence the mean power to the lamp it is possible to vary the intensity of the light output. Although variable-voltage devices are used for various purposes, the term dimmer is generally reserved for those intended to control lighting.

I am replacing a Lightolier 3-way Dimmer switch with a Leviton IPI06-1LX Dimmer switch. When I install the dimmer switch it works fine. But the on/off regular wall switch won't turn the light on or...

It depends. Some dimmers are considered "smart dimmers," where the control on the other end of the 3-way has to be intelligent enough to send a signal back to the dimmer. If the Lightolier dimmer was a smart dimmer, then chances are that the 3-way control was designed to talk only to that specific dimmer. The Leviton product you replaced it with is a simple, basic dimmer - it should work in conjunction with a simple, basic 3-way switch.

If the 3-way control already IS a simple, basic 3-way switch - then I would simply re-check the wiring of the dimmer you replaced.

Switch cover feels warm -2 pass&seymour dimmers in 4" box is this o.k.

Dimmers are naturally warm.
They are meant to radiate the heat to avoid burning out.
IF the dimmer is HOT, then that is a signals trouble, and dimmer is overloaded or has gone bad. Check Load capacity rating of dimmer, and/or replace HOT dimmer.

Load is the total wattage of lights being controlled.
Ordinary dimmer from box store usually has load rating of 600 watts.
Other residential dimmers are rated up to 1800 watts, which is max for residential dimmers.
1800 Watt dimmers have special aluminum cover that looks like a heat sink, because it is a heat sink. Aluminum dissipates heat faster than other metals, so dimmers usually have special aluminum cover or they can have aluminum fins that stick out on the sides so heat radiates.

I am wondering if a defective dimmer could be the cause of my kitchen lights being dimmer than usual

1) Electronics inside dimmer can go bad, and lights will not work as before.
Simply replace dimmer.
I buy new dimmers at Home Depot.

2) Lutron shows a wide variety of dimmers:
Use pictures from page to identify type of dimmer you want, and then google search: For example search for 'skylark dimmer' or 'rotary dimmer'
http://www.lutron.com/Products/StandAloneControls/Dimmers-Switches/Pages/DimmersSwitches.aspx

3) Add a comment for more free help. For example how to install new dimmer without calling electrician.
Also take advantage of fixya phone service.

I AM REPLACING A 3 WAY WITH A LEVITON TRUE TOUCH 3WAY DIMMER. IT APPEARS AS THOUGH THE OTHER 3WAY IS ACTING AS A SWITCH FOR THE DIMMER. IF THE OTHER SWITH IS "ON" THEN THE DIMMER WORKES FINE...

The other switch should only be changing from one wire being hot when it is in the up position to a second wire being hot when it is in the down position. Then the new dimmer should be hot on one terminal when the other switch is up and on a different terminal when it is down.
I'm not sure how the Leviton dimmer works, though.

My Lutron dimmer/lights suddenly will not turn on. all electricity works throughout the house. The green light that usually is lit on the panel is not on either. any suggestions?

Indicator light is OFF.
Either dimmer stopped working or power to dimmer is off.
Check if electricity is present inside box.
Check nearby electrical plug to see if everything nearby has power.
Swap dimmer with regular switch and see if lights turn ON.
Check dimmer wires: if wires to dimmer are pushed into 'quick connect' holes on back of dimmer, these wires can get loose.
If dimmer is connected by wire nut, sometimes a wire can pull loose.
If no electricity is inside the box, and breaker is ON, then there is a loose wire inside one of the boxes on that circuit and electrician has to track back until loose wire is discovered.

Replacement parts for in-wall devices are not made.
If new dimmer is necessary, consider lighting factors:
Total wattage of lights. New dimmer has watt rating.
Type of lights. Dimmers specify florescent or tungsten (incandescent) or both.
Single-pole and 3-way. If two dimmers control same lights, one is control dimmer, other is companion dimmer.

The on-off switch for the dimmer is "loose" and does not turn the light on anymore.

There are no repair parts for in-wall electrical devices.
When they go dad you buy another.
Lowes and Home Depot carry inexpensive dimmers.
Look for 3 things:
1) Wattage: most off-the-shelf dimmers are 500-1000Watts. Add up total wattage.
2) If you are dimming incandescent bulbs, dimmer package will say tungsten or incandescent.
Package will say florescent if dimmer also works for florescent bulbs.
3) If dimmer is 3-way, with a dimmer on either end of a room, many times the dimmers are sold as a package of 2 dimmers with 1 dimmer that controls the other dimmer.

I only need a single pole dimmer switch. Which product do i buy. I bought the smart dimmer system remote, but it doesn't seem to be right.

9b780ea.jpg
The photo shows the master 'smart' dimmer, but you purchased the remote 'smart' dimmer that is slave to the master dimmer.

So you are correct, that is not the correct dimmer for a single-pole application.
Cooper brand Aspire dimmers are available in 'Smart' dimmer and just plain old dimmer.

Smarthome has a plain old aspire dimmer
http://www.smarthome.com/21530S/Aspire-9530DS-600w-Slide-Dimmer-Desert-Sand/p.aspx
Google products also shows the Lutro Maestro dimmer
http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=maestro+dimmer
Lowes and Home Depot have ordinary dimmers also.

Both the dimmer linked to above will work for your single pole application. Keep in mind, they also work for 3-way applications so there will be an extra wire.
Since you know the phrase 'single pole' I suspect the wiring for you will be a cinch.

If you need assistance with the new dimmer, add a comment and I will answer.

I just purchased 2 of these dimmers from ebay but they do not have the instructions. Both are exactly alike and have 2 wires. How do they install?

You posted under Pass and Seymour rotary dimmer that has two wires.

If your dimmer is like other rotary dimmers, it has a black and red wire.
Or it has 2 black wires.

If your switch has 3 wires, then the dimmer will not work.
If your switch has 2 wires:
Probably both switch wires are black.
One of these wires goes to Load (lights)
The other wire is Hot from breaker box

If dimmer has 2 black wires, they connect to either wire from switch.

If dimmer has black and red wires,
> dimmer-black connects to Hot from breaker
> dimmer red connects to Load
> green (if available) goes to bare copper wire

Recommendation:
If you do not know which wire is Hot from breaker, simply hook up dimmer and see if it works.
If it doesn't, then reverse the wires.

If this information does not fit your specific dimmer, please answer back with more details and we'll get it working.

On/off works but dimmers do not. leviton toggle

If each pendant has an individual transformer that is about the size of a hotwheel then you need a dimmer specifically for ELECTRONIC LOW VOLTAGE. A lot of electricians don't know that the different types of lights require different dimmers. Most store bought dimmers are for incandescent lights only, and some nicer dimmers like the Lutron Maestro's are rated for incandescent or MAGNETIC Low Voltage which require a different Sin wave interuption. I don't know that leviton makes a dimmer in that style for Electronic Low Voltage. You could install a Lutron DVELV300P-Wh, but that is a Decora opening. http://www.lutron.com/CMS400/WorkArea/downloadasset.aspx?id=25437
Here is a link to explain the difference in how the dimmer needs to work. Good luck!

Lutron Dimmer Not Dimming But On/Off Works

What is the dimmer rated for? Your load on the track appears to be 200 watts. A standard dimmer will burn out, you need to look on the dimmer to see what it is rated for. Did it run hot with the dimmer before you had this problem? They make dimmers for higher wattage that will do the job for you.
