Because safety comes first! The most important thing to remember when working with electricity is to turn off the power. It is also important to learn how to make sure the power is off, and this can be done easily using a variety of different testers.

I cant find where the batteries are located on my IDEAL voltage tester #61-085

The #61-085 does not have batteries. (It does not test for continuity) The #61-086 does have batteries.
1. Replace batteries when touching the leads together no longer lights the continuity LED or produces an audible sound. 2. Remove test leads from tester. 3. Loosen the encapsulated screw from the bottom of the case. 4. Remove battery cap. 5. Replace the batteries with (4) new 1.5V button-type batteries (IDEAL# 61-201, IEC #LR44, or NEOA# 1166A). 6. Replace battery cap and re-tighten the encapsulated screw.

Voltage tester shows red light on all the 3 cables(including the ground) of a 14-2 home circuit,

HOLD ON!!! The Klein 69127 is an automotive tester to be used for voltages between 6V-24V, AC or DC. The higher voltage in your home could possibly damage the unit as well as yourself. It would be safer for you to use the non contact tester to verify voltage Klien NCVT-1

Do have a number to call? we need it to ask questions.

The HST401 is an older 'legacy' product. If you go to and select the support tab and then choose 'Legacy Product' you will see a list of products. Scroll down until you see your tester model number and click on 'Manual' and an operation manual will open in a separate window.

Just tested gfci receptacle with sperry gfci outlet tester and got all three (red, yellow, yellow) lights. What does this mean??

Your tester is defective then. All 3 lights should not light up. The correct wiring would be 2 yellow, no red.

  • Solenoid type tester polarity
  • indicator
  • 120/240/600 VAC; 50/60 HZ
  • Lifetime warranty
Your 12 volt battery is DC voltage as well as far below the voltage testing threshold of 120 volts.

I have 6 outlets that do not work.

I would start by determining if these 6 outlets are on the same circuit. Also I am usually not too confident in the non contact voltage tester you are using. They tend to give false positives if they contact anything or even if you move them fast. I would invest in an inexpensive multimeter whcih will allow you to test actual voltage across the poles and ground and also check for continuity between poles/ground (WITH CIRCUIT OFF ONLY).

Did these outlets previously work properly?

Usage Repair

the current reading on a tester is independent of the battery in the tester. The battery is there to provide a tiny amount of current so you can read the resistance on a circuit in ohms.

What probably happened is that the useage selector switch was in the wrong position when a measurement was made for voltage of other and being in the current position created a short and the current measurement circuit was burned out.

for more details, please follow up with questions/comments

Sincerely Loringh
