Yes. A very simple way to use an inverter for emergency power (such as during a power outage), is to use a car battery (with the vehicle running), and an extension cord running into the house, where you can then plug in electrical appliances.

Yes inverters can be used in emergency purpose in case of power shut down. The rating of the inverters depends on the usage of load in your home. A 5kVa inverter is ideal for home application and can provide supply to fan, tubelight(40w) and computer . The number of hours depends on the charge of the battery and hence constant charging and dischraging of the battery in the inverter is required for good battery life.

Can't find the transfer switch, and could it go bad. Shore power and generator power works to the main panel box, but won't charge coach batteries

although it is possible to do separately most times the transfer switch is internal to the inverter , and the fact you mention that inverter is not charging batteries tells me your fault lay in the inverter all or part of it is not working , look at it carefully these have sometimes two reset breakers on there cases

My inverter (500 va) (battery based electric generator for power backup) keeps on charging batteries even when the charging light goes off making the inverter, wires and battery very hot.

This a possible failure of the voltage detection circuit in the inverter main board and requires the fault be identified by checking the voltage/current feed/limiter to the battery.
Once when the battery voltage has reached the threshold set up the charging should stop and then the circuit will analyse the voltage on the board to trigger the charging to be put ON.
This can be a failure of the detection circuit and if not checked can damage the battery.

yes, the problem is that electronic/electrical components age with use. especially voltage regulators and switching transistors. as they age they can no longer sustain the current you are demandiing from the unit. the units are designed to run in the middle zone, not at full maximum load all the time, if you do that you will weat it out quicker. Always buy a power supply that is double your intended wattage and it will last many years. Hope this answers your question

How to set up Power backup using Batteries and an Inverter

Having only two batteries and an inverter is not an UPS (uninterrupted power supply) does not make a backup power system.
How are the batteries charged up and maintained?
What is the output voltage from the inverter?
Does this voltage suit the Netgear wireless router?
I suggest you get a proper UPS and connect the Netgear power adapter to the UPS. There are small UPS units available 350VA which will suit your needs.
I use a larger UPS from APC for my computer and my wireless router and found the unit very reliable.
Check out APC WEB site - click on this link - then your country and select back-UPS ES for home computers :-
