Question about Heating & Cooling

My thermostat is flashing L6 instead of temperature display. It is a basic LED nonprogrammable model about 4 years old.

My display also began blinking this morning as I tried to switch it from the off mode to Heat. I can still adjust the temperature but the display continues to blink L6 after a few seconds.
