Your screen needs to be degaussed. It's normal for the colors to look a little strange after you move a set around because of magnetic fields, and degaussing tneutralizes the field on the tube face which causes the discoloration. There is a circuit in color TV sets to degauss them automatically when you first turn them on, but they can't always cope. Or a part called a thermistor may have failed in your set (it's common) and the degaussing circuit may not be working.

The colors may gradually come back to normal if the TV degaussing circuit is working. You can purchase a handheld degaussing coil and clear this up, or you can call a TV technician to come out and do it. I have no idea what it costs for service calls today - I've been out of that business a good while now. I just made a quick check on eBay, and several degaussing coils are listed with average price around $50. Check what a tech would charge to come out and let price be your guide.

And the x-ray shutdown test you mentioned has nothing to do with the colors. That's to make sure the set will shut off properly if the picture tube voltage rises too high, possibly causing a safety hazard from x-ray emission. Don't worry about that; only after replacing some parts in the high-voltage section do you need to check the operation.

Thanks for using Fixya!

This tv have a colors wheel, hear loud motor noises, humming noises, squiling or grinding noises, have pictures black and white. All these causes are by the colors wheel is worn out, warp rubbing against it motor or fiber plastic glass briddle about to brake aparts.Don't turn this tv on anymore until,u change the colors wheel or u will damage the projection engine. The colors wheel are hard to change for amatur and hobiest.Because involved taking out many machanical parts, before even can come to the colors wheel to take out and change it.The best course to to hire a Tv Tech.to do this job.The price colors wheel part and labors.Awhile back was about $500-550,now??

I bypassed the safety switch (it was bad) and vacuumed and blew out all of the dust. So far with this set, 3 years old, I have replaced the bulb twice,it exploded both times, and the color wheel which also exploded! We love the picture but the next time it goes out, it goes out to the trash and I will purchase a top of the line LED/LCD set. No moving parts!!! Samsung designed and manufactured a whole bunch of lemon sets and will not admit it. I have found several hundred complaints about their DLP sets and only a few on other brands.

It is the color wheel, inside the light engine. The bearings get dirty and makes it harder for the wheel to spin causing that whin.

Color variation and blinking red light on bottom of tv

The light flashing 5 times is normal at turn on as the set is monitoring current drain on the pictures tube cathodes. Any speakers near the set that have un-shielded magnets could possibly cause color issues.

No color

Diane, so sorry to burst your bubble doll but this is not a place for you to even consider experimenting with. Do you know how to read a schematic? Do you know what a burst amp is or how its generated? Really you should not attempt to repair a TV set unless you understand how the color or how the other circuits work. Do you know how the croma Oscilator and the burst circuit works together in the video to produce color? Please unless you can answer all of the abouve , seek out a pro to assist you in this repair as I said many times before, a solid state TV set has no user serviceable parts inside them.

Sounds like tyo me that the picture tube is getting soft on ya!!. Its a common factor that occours with all tvs but mostly with zenith. A service tech might be able for a small fee rejuvinate the picture tube but theres never a warrantee with this type repair. Its not something a user should attemp to do as theres hi voltage inside this set even on the tube socket after its ubplugged for awhile. Seek the advise of a repair pro to see how bad the tube is. Good Luck
