Question about Projection Televisions

1 Answer

Distorted picture What specific controls should I use and what adjustments should I make. Imagine having a photograph in your hand between your thumb and ring finer. Now take that photo and bend it in a concave fashion. The photo distorts when it bends. The picutre on my television is the same way. The stock market ticker flows across the screen in an arc. Am I giving you an accurate description of what is happening?

Every monitors(almost latest) or crt or lcd got a pincushion an adjustment of bending of the screen to become look like a semi 3d. try to adjust that and see what happen. if still persist then you might send that to a technician to replace some parts(if the hardware is the problem). by the waty it must have a default control for that and after press the degauss to refresh the screen.

When you go to menu then setup do you see convergence? If not then you have a blowed Fuse on the deflection board FL231. If you have convergence in menu then try to adjust .

Fuse blew out in our 52" rca projection tv. replaced it...now the three colors don't line up. what could be the problem?

If one or more of the color components of the picture is also distorted in a bow-tie shape, you have a blown convergence amplifier module - the fuse went when the amplifier melted down. This is a common failure in CRT-type rear projection TVs. The modules are black plastic slabs about 3" wide by 1 11/16" high by 5/16" thick with 22 pins on the bottom edge (more or less, depending on version). They are marked STK392-nnn, where nnn is a three-digit number denoting the specific version. There are two of them, and they will be bolted to one or two flat or finned metal plates to dissipate the heat they generate. Sometimes when they go out, they also burn out some resistors in the convergence circuitry nearby on the circuit board.

If you don't have to replace any resistors, you may not need to readjust the convergence on the set after repairs, provided you don't try to adjust the convergence beforehand.

The part price is generally between $12-$35. Avoid the cheap Chinese no-name knockoffs - they don't last. The major brand supplier of this parts family is Sanyo.

On the other hand, if you just have a minor misalignment, this could have been caused by a mechanical shift in the optics when you dragged the set away from the wall to get at the fuse (if you went "bump" - "oops!"). The problem can be corrected electrically using your remote control - see your owner's manual for the front panel and remote control combination code to get into convergence adjustment mode. Be careful to keep the convergence dot spacing uniform across the screen or your picture will be misshapen, work in small increments, and keep in mind that adjustments in one part of the picture affect convergence elsewhere. If an attempt to adjust the convergence results in no adjustment (you can't move the dots of one or two of the colors) stop - you do have a bad part. Attempting to adjust convergence with a bad part will make a lot of extra convergence adjustment work after repairs.

There is a red shadow on the picture, mostly on the left hand side, and the picture is a bit blurry

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture
