Question about Panasonic AG-185 Camcorder

PV-GS31... can someone help me?

Maybe what I am asking is too complicated but I thought this was the best forum to look for help... Here is my dilemma... I purchased a Panasonic PV-GS31 MiniDV Camcorder yesterday. I purchased it based on the ratings I saw online in comparison to other models in its price range. The guy at CC told me that this particular cam did NOT come with any Software or cables but if I had Windows XP, I would be fine. The Cam has USB 2.0 Output as well as Firewire. I have managed to snap some photos with the camcorder and send them to my PC from the SD Card I put in the cam. However, I would like to transfer VIDEO from this unit to my PC. My question is: 1. Can I transfer video to my PC from the USB port? if so, how? See, I didnt purchase a Firewire cable because I know that USB 2.0 transfers at a higher speed. right? Ok, I admit I was also being cheap. But anyway, the Panny website offers NO support for this unit in the XP environment. All I want to do is be able to transfer my video and photos to my PC so I can start my career in editing. Can any of you guys help me? Please understand that although I can operate a camcorder and perform the common operations, I know nothing about moving data in the digital domain from a cam to a PC, so please be gentle with this novice. Thanks.

Go ahead and buy firewire cable get adobe premiere pro and firewire cable. Firewire is faster than usb. you will use usb cable just for pictures transfer. good luck

Your logic is correct, UB2 is a little faster. However, as you have discovered, it is not recognized by the software very well. The quick solution is to buy a firewire kit at Amazon or where ever and your problems are over. The harder solution is to find software versatile enough to recognize video from the UB2 port.

You can find a charger at Wal-Mart for about $45 that includes a car charger. I just got mine there after searching Best Buy and Circuit City to no avail! Just make sure to check the back of the case for compatibility with the battery and/or camcorder.

Please help with panasonic PV-GS31 !!

The driver for Win 200 will work fine under XP. Vista of course is another monster all together.
What I would suggest under Vista is the following.
Use the same Win2000 Drivers...
  1. Extract the drivers to a folder.
  2. Plug the camera into the USB port and Vista will detect it. At this point (if you are really lucky) Vista will have drivers in it's catalogue and install them.
  3. If it does not have them it will pop up a box and ask what you want to do.
  4. Choose select the driver from a list.
  5. When the window pops up, choose Have Disk and browse to the folder you extracted the files into.
  6. Pick the right INF file and then select OK.
  7. It will then begin to try and install the drivers.
  8. Follow any other prompts you see, and make sure to read each one clearly.
Hope that helps =)

PV-GS31 often disconnects from vista

I called Panasonic directly today & asked about the Vista driver for the GS31. No such driver exists, but they are trying to develop a driver specifically for Vista users of this camcorder. Finally the mystery is correctly answered & solved for us Vista owners! woooohooo !
