Hello!

the number ports are the actual ports at the back of the router where you will plug the cable to connect your computer directly to the router.

to find the network key for your wireless connection, you need to connect your computer directly to the router and access the setup page of your router. You need to go to the wireless settings and get the wireless network key from there.

A couple of things:

1. make sure that the wireless adapter is enabled - under NETWORK CONNECTIONS

2. for now at least just set the configuration to "obtain automatically" and make sure the
gateway number is the same as your router... ie 192.168.xxx.xxx

3. Go on your router (via web interface... see manual for instructions) and make sure that DHCP is enabled

then... go to RUN and type in cmd a black window with text in it will pop up and a cursor will be flashing in it. Type ipconfig and hit enter (some windows versions "winipcfg" instead) and see what it is showing for your ip address. It should be 192.168.xxx.xxx for IP address.

Double check how you have the wires in the router. Some wifi adapters perfer to use their own software to configure the first time...

it is a good idea to have your pc plugged into the router during setup. with a wireless connection, you may loose your connection during setup since many routers need to "reboot" after changes are made. after the initial setup, making minor changes via wifi are acceptable.

6.Click "MANUAL WIRELESS NETWORK SETUP"
7.change now the SSID or NETWORK NAME (create a new name to avoid conflicts with your ol network name that was saved into your computer
8.Look for security mode, Select WEP or WPA-Personnal
if WEP select 10 number as a password
if WPA-Personnal, minimum of 8 Characters
9. type in the network key
for WEP type it in WEP KEY 1 (PLEASE DONNT CHANGE key 2,3,4)

The internet button is on, but I don't get internet from the router, only directly from the modem.

This an wire setup gone wrong!
The wire you use to get the internet from on your modem, plugs into I believe a Yellow port at the back of your router.
The rest of the ports are for hardwiring each computer.
So your computer, We say #1, will have a wire from you LAN card at the back of you computer to port #1 on you router.
you will have to go into your windows internet setup to change some settings. So to do this
My computer, Control Panel, Internet setup.Internet wizard setup.
You no longer SAY you use modem for internet, but setup through router.
This will NOT be a new setup but an existing setup

Do i have to hardwire my Sony HDTV to my router to get it on my network, there is no mention of hardwiring in the manual

hi Steve
2 things to check. Is there an ethernet socket on the back of the TV? is there any mention of connecting by wireless? Chances are that if it connects by wireless there will be instructions how to do it as it won't be simple.
I think you'll find an ethernet socket on the back and then it will probably just work by plugging it in.

Slow ping time

Hi,

Ping depends on the server network and not the configuration of the laptop. If the ping varies, you need to check the network configuration.

Any further help, let me know.

Thanks for using "Fixya".

Network key for router.

In onder to obtain this information you need a computer that has internet connection through the router, if you have a main computer that is wired through the router then use that computer if not try to hardwire the laptop to the router(plug it to any of the number ports that say ethernet/lan). Access the setup page of the router by typing 192.168.2.1(deafult IP address of the router) on the address bar of your browser(i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari), type admin for the username and leave the password blank. Go to the Wireless Settings/Configuration tab of the router and verify the security mode(WEP or WPA)
