We have a Toshiba Satellite A104-S1014 laptop, about 2 1/2 years old. I have always used the standby mode when the lid is closed. Normally, the PC just comes right out of standby. In the last 3 weeks, the laptop no longer comes out of sleep. What is strange is that I cannot easily reset the PC. If I remove the battery and let it alone for 10-15 minutes, it still will not come out of sleep. I keep trying and eventually it will start again, but I cannot predict when it will work or fail.

If the login box is displayed when it wakes up, that is usual. It uses a sensor to detect when the lid id open and will come out of standby when it thinks the lid is open.
Re configure the power off settings to avoid standby or sleep mode when the lid is closed.
To keep your laptop from going into standby mode you want to change the power settings. To do that, click on the start button/windows logo to open the start menu. Then click on control panel, or if you do not see it start typing control panel. Then go to power settings. You then need to change the advanced power settings for your battery options. Change the power settings so that it does not standby at all. Another thing you can do is plug the power cable in and that way it also will not enter standby mode.
Reboot the laptop, go to control panel > power options > go through the settings, especially what does the computer do when lid is closed and change the setting to "do nothing", turn off hibernation if it is on. Change other settings to now allow the computer to go to sleep, just let it run until you decide to turn it all the way off. Sleep mode and Hibernation cause more problems than do good.
control panel >power options has all the settings to change what mode the computer goes into when you close the lid eg.sleep hiberante etc. so set that up for starters. when you close the lid on some laptops they go into hibernation which can be difficult to come out of. I find it best to put the computer in sleep mode when i go for a break, then it only takes one push of the button to continue where i left off
you can extend or turn off stanby or have it go into sleep mode automatically in the power option setting, and while in control panel check wireless keyboard has full control. The click of the mouse should reactivate it from standyby so try sleep for now.
I hope this knowledge helps you
To my knowledge it could be hibernate mode for laptops to save battery life when not plugged into the wall, try pressing the power button, my Compaq did that too. Also don't hold down the power button as after 5 seconds it just shuts off the laptop, unless you wanna do that.
