Question about Kenmore Elite 45986 Front Load Washer

1 Answer

The Start Button on My Kenmore Elite Calypso won't engage

I received an FL error code and then took the bottom and back panels off, to clean the Pump and connect tubes, there was alot of lint in there that seemed to stop the wheel from turning. Now that this is clean, i put everything back together and plugged it in, and now all buttons on the display work, except when i press start, nothing happens. I don't even hear a beep, which i heard (start button worked), right before i cleaned the pump. I think the computer might need to be reset. Do you have any idea how to do this. I keep seeing postings on a diagnostic code, but i can't find the code anywhere. Please help.

Thanks

I unplugged the washer, and plugged it back in after 5 hours. All of the buttons work fine. I press one of the wash cycles, it lights up, the dispay shows the time , and all works normally.. Then when i go to press the Start button, It doesn't start; the button doesn't beep, which seems like its not engaging. All other buttons work though. Very strange. Do you think the door sensor isn't working correctly? And is preventing the washer from starting, cause it thinks the door is open? If so, do you know where to look for the door sensor?

Absolutely a posibility. the first thing I would do is make sure the pump is plugged securley back in. If the control doesn't "sense" the pump, it won't run.

The door latch mechanisim is to the right side of the door opening. There is a round hole on the top side. This is one of the door "sensors" Often the pin gets broken off, and the machine thinks the door is still open. Underneath that is a square hole. The is where the pin from the door goes in and allows the door to latch. You can use the following directions to take the latch assembly out and test for continuity with a meter.

You will find a sliver wire around the gray boot (rubber seal) in the front holding it on. Pull it off. The front of the boot will be moveable. Remove the side on the right. As you reach in, you will feel your door latch. There are 3 connectors. Unplug the 3 connectors (don't worry about the order on them, because they are shaped so they can only be plugged in one way to the door latch). Next reach inside and hold the latch assembly from behind while removing the 3 silver #20 torx screws. Lift slightly up on the latch assembly and remove it. Again check continuity across the pins to verify they are ok.

Another thing to check might be removing the top (3# 20 torxs screws along the back side of the top) Remove these and slide the top towards the rear and lift up. Set the top to the side. Make sure all of your connections going into the CCu (the big white box with all of the wires going to it) are plugged in securely after you have unplugged it. While you are performing this test, keep one hand on the unpainted metal of the washer. (an accidental static discharge can ruin the very expensive CCU)

Try these and let me know what you find.

There is not a reset on the computer. While you can put it in a diagnostic mode and check individual portions of the system ( fill, nutate, drain, spin, etc) the only "reset" is removing power to the system for 2 minutes and trying again. If you are now getting nothing at all, I would check all of my connections (electrical and pressure) and also test the continuity on the fuse on your control board in the console (with the unit unplugged of course) If you remove the 1/4 screws from the back of the console, you will see what looks like a standard fuse on your motor control board. Check the continuity with the meter. If it shows open, the procedure is to replace the whole board. This is costly and if it were mine I would solder a new fuse in place. Try these steps and let me know if you're still having trouble.

The FL error code means:
Flood Condition:
FL flashes if any overfill condition occurs. This condition occurs when excessive water in the tub causes the overfill switch to trip. The control must realize that the trip was due to an overfill condition instead of a suds lack condition in order for FL to be displayed

With an overfill condition, the beeper repeats a warning every 10 seconds with no time-out. The pump is cycled in drain mode for 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off until the overfill switch resets or power is discontinued to the unit.

Press STOP/CANCEL to clear the display.

This problem I see on these are the water pumps getting clogged with lint or other things, causing the pump not to pump all of the water out at times.

There is a check "valve" in the drain assembly that seems to sometimes cause problems with the FL error code. You can remove this piece, and might avoid changing the pump.

I have kenmore elite calypso washer. FL shows on the control panel. Some says drain the water manually or check the water pressure. how do I do it?

Probably something in the pump. Remove the base panel take the pump apart get the junk out of it
themobilian_2530.jpg
Older Calypso washers have a pump like this newer ones have a diff type pump that can be taken apart. The FL error : FL flashes if any overfill condition occurs. This condition occurs when excessive water in the tub causes the overfill switch to trip. The control must realize that the trip was due to an overfill condition instead of a suds lock condition in order for FL to be displayed.
Causes of flood condition. Inlet valves stuck on, Sediment in water level pressure tube. Clogged pump. All of the above. Service manual and more HERE
