I have not done this yet but it sounds reasonable and it backs up what a friend said who prints photos as cards.
I really don't feel competent to do this. How do i find out from printer software how to clean head nozzle?

You may need to clean the print head, try doing head nozzle clean from printer software.
If it does not work you may need to clean the printer head and the part called encoding strip, that is probably stained with ink.
The encoding strip is the white strip that runs behind the ink carriage , near to a thicker belt.
The encoding strip determines position of the ink carriage, if it is dirty the printer will jump vertical lines.
You may need a repair shop to fix this.

It can also be a faulty cartridge , try a different cartridge.

Hi, here is printer user manual, see page 72, where it says 'clean printer cartridges, that is the head cleaning procedure. Do the cleaning a couple of time, if problem do not disappear try a different cartridge.
If you still experience the problem, then the printer may be slightly defective, or the encoder strip may be dirty. In this case try to see if problem persists when you lower down resolution. If it does only solution is repairing, the technician will manually clean encoder strip and internal parts.

Two faint white horizontal lines

the white ghost lines are down to the charge wire within the toner cartridge being dirty, the only real way forward is to replace the toner cartridge as access to the charge chorona wire is not possible without ruining the cartridge itself

Epson Stylus r220 prints with white lines... i installed a CIS and it worked fine for about 6 months, now i'm getting prints with white lines (or fine spots) i tried nozzle check, which comes out good......

Nozzle check must perfect for perfect output. There are tranversal lines at vertical straight lines that represent same point of head micro piezo. If tranversal lines no clog at all, but vertical straight lines not perfectly straight, the result not good (like horizontal white banding). Check it? Head aligment is for vertical banding. If your result is horizontal banding, you don't need to realign head. It's caused by some residual at the output of head sprayer. So, the spray of ink not straight to paper. Try to print with photo/best photo.

Canon pixma ip4200 colours are yellowy orange on teh photos - dont match on screen colour nozzle check shows the second of the cyan lines as very faint

(Had already done two deep cleans)
1. removed all print cartridges keeping them together and upright
2. qtip (cotton ball on a small plastic stick) soaked in generic nail varnish remover {alcohol based)
3 cleaned print head where cartridge sits repeatedly until no more ink came off on the cotton wool
4. did a deep clean twice
printer then functioned properly

I had this trouble, went through cleaning & realignment, then various print options. What i found was that dark colours had faint dark horizontal lines 5mm apart when printing on Photo in the epson driver. Changing it to Best Photo solved it.

Printing

Likely your purge unit needs cleaning...

Make sure by printing out a test page from printer (not from computer).

If test page is good, you have a software issue. If test page is bad, you need to clean your head and/or purge unit.
