Hi,
the reason can be many, any way follow these steps;
- clean the cd (Scratches, scuffs, break in the disc; they can all cause the problem you described.)
1) Right click on "My Computer" and click "Properties"
2) Go to the "Hardware" tab and Click the "Device Manager" button.
3) Find "DVD/CD-ROM Drives" and click the + to drop down your installed devices
4) Find your device and Right click, then choose "uninstall"
5) Reboot
6) When you boot back up, Windows XP will recognize you have a hardware device that isn't configured
7) Follow the prompts to setup the device (You can connect to Windows Update to allow it to search for a driver
If the laptop is recognizing any cd then it might be the drive is damaged/broken and needs to be replaced.Hope these information helps,
Please rate if the solution was helpful, thanks!
