The temperature setting, located on the outside of the freezer door, will not change. The setting is normally on 4 on a scale from 0-7. Now the setting looks like the letter C written backwards. The food is unthawing. Please help. How do you change to a colder setting? I've tried holding the up and down arrows but nothing changes.

Nothing happening? When I press to lock, then press the up and down arrows simultaneously and wait three seconds.... nothing? Am I doing something wrong?

  • fgcrider Jul 13, 2011

Must be a faulty control, still won't reset. Don't have the expertise to change the "control"
myself. I'll have to call a Frigidaire certified technician in the am. Things melting, should I just turn off the freezer and keep door closed till the morning and the repairman, or just keep on ? Thanks for the help.

Many thanks.... I'll keep you posted tomorrow on the outcome and service level of the Frigidaire technician we call. Bought the unit from Livingood Appliance in Savannah, Ga.
Will call them tomorrow for service recomendation.... we'll need someone who can come out right away!

Hello, welcome to FixYa.

Based on your post I understand you have a problem with a freezer, however if you could provide the make (brand name) & complete model number I would be better equipped to assist you without generalizing on what it may or may not be.

The model number in the post header (frigidaire FFU2124D) can't be right as that indicates it is a manual thermostat freezer with the colntrol inside the cabinet.

This being the case it is better I wait before saying too much...at the risk of it being irrelavent or contrary to the operation of your particular unit.

I'll watch and look forward for your reply and we can go forward from here. Thank you for visiting FixYa for your inquiry.

Regards,

Macmarkus :)

    Hello again,

Thank you for replying with the necessary model number. If this is correct your control should look like the images shown here...correct if wrong please.

Now to move forward. Does the control respond to any command ? Try this diagnostic mode and let me know the results.

To enter the Service Mode, lock the keyboard then press and hold the up arrow and the down arrow for three seconds (until the display changes to "8").

When the diagnostics mode is entered, the compressor is turned off and the digit "8" is displayed for three seconds.

After three seconds, the sequential information below will be displayed.

    1. Blank for 0.5 seconds

    2. Model ID for 1 second (See Table below)

    3. Blank for 0.5 seconds

    4. Software Version and LED test for 3 seconds.

    a. Hi Temp LED illuminates during display of 1st digit of the version number for one second,

    b. Door Ajar LED illuminates during display of 2nd digit of the version number for one second.

    c. Both LED's illuminate during display of 3rd digit of the version number for one second.

    5. Blank for 0.5 seconds

    6. Thermistor status ("0" for open, "C" for close or "-" for good thermistor) for three seconds.

    7. 10 seconds for power check. During this time each key activates a specific load
a.UP key activates the compressor and lowercase "c" is displayed.

b.DOWN key activates defrost heater and lowercase "d" is displayed

    8. MUTE key activates the light and an "L" is displayed. 10 seconds after the last key press, the system will exit the diagnostic mode, automatically assuming the default temperature setting. If required, the compressor restarts after 13 minutes.

Error ModesIf the thermistor is open, the display will alternate between "E" and "9".

If the thermistor is shorted, the display will alternate between "E" and "8".

If a key is stuck for more than 30 seconds, the display will alternate between "E" and "7".

I'll watch for your post, good luck. If the sequence will not accept the test it is a faulty control. Part #297366100 and is available at "repairclinic.com" or "searspartsdirect.com" for approx. $60USD to name a couple. (I'd check other sources, those are just bookmarked on my PC)

    Hello again,

I don't think you are doing anything wrong. I would try it several times to be sure, if it won't enter the test it is simply a faulty control unfortunately...no way around it.

Let me know how you make out or if I can assist you further as far as replacing the control. I can email you a service manual if you want to post an email address as an option too.

    Regards,

    Macmarkus :)

    Hi,

I would certainly keep the unit "on" and the door closed and maintain as much cold in there as possible until morning.

Maybe you can give the tech a heads up and notify them you suspect the control, part #297366100. and this may insure they have the part on their first visit.

The new control may appear slightly different as shown here,

...but that is because of revisions made by the manufacturer...Frigidaire.

Let me know how it goes as I'd be interested in the service you get...hopefully they are authorized Frigidaire people as I am, hence the access to the service info readily available to me. Good luck.

    Regards,

    Macmarkus :)

    Hello,

Any word on the control problem?

I'm just hoping to follow up on the issue with your freezer since when we last spoke you had a service tech coming (I think) to look at it.

My Fridgidaire upright Gallery freezer is freezing my food but the appliance seems to be constantly running and the temperature control on the outside is reading 29 Celsius when it obviously isn't

Hi Susan Abboud - Modern freezers have increased storage capacity and keep more even temperature that may require the compressors to run longer but use less energy. Was the unit disconnected previously for any reason? If so, freezer requires a minimum of 4 hours to cold down completely. Confirm that the temperature control is not set too cold and that the door is not being open frequently. A dirty, cracked, worn or poorly fitted door gasket can allow warm air to enter the unit causing it to have to run longer to remove the warm air. Leaks in the door seal will cause freezer to run longer in order to maintain desired temperature. Cleaned the gasket, if it is too damage then it will need to be replace. You can check and see if the door seal is bad by, placing a dollar between the gasket and cabinet. Check to see if the door is being blocked by anything stopping it from closing properly. If nothing is stopping the door then replace gasket. Keep in mind that there should also be at least 4-6 in of air space on all sides of the unit. If freezer is built in or has items stored on top that cover the unit, the can cause long run times, high temperature in the freezer and premature failure to the unit. Do not block the toe grille on the lower front of the unit. Sufficient air circulation is essential for the properly operation of your freezer, about 3 inches around the unit.

What shld settings be as food is freezing in fridge it has side by side knobs saying colder mid less cold it is a westinghouse fan forced frost free freestyle unit

The settings are "relative". Someone with this fridge in Montana may need to run the same fridge with different settings than someone in Texas to get the same temperatures.

Many manufacturers recommend that the fresh food compartment should be 34 degrees F, and the freezer -10 to 0 degrees F. To set this properly, place a thermometer in the freezer (that can display temperatures as low as the desired temperature). Adjust the thermometer for the correct freezer temperature before going on to the fridge. A fully stocked freezer could take 12 hours or more for temperatures to stabilize after making changes to the thermostat. Once the -10 to 0 degree temperature has been achieved, set the fresh food compartment temperature.

Place a thermometer (that can display below freezing) in a 6 (or so) oz flexible plastic cup of water and place on a shelf in the fridge. A glass of water could break if the temperature gets below 32 degrees if the water turns to ice. The water acts as a buffer to rapidly changing temperatures when the door is opened to read the thermometer. If the fridge is "full", allow 24 hours for the temperature to stabilize before making changes.

If the fridge and freezer are empty, changes may be seen in just a few hours or less. Otherwise, wait the 12 / 24 hours for the freezer / fridge compartments.

I hope this helps and good luck!

New freezer set on 4. Runs a lot. Could we raise setting safely.

Yes you can raise the setting if you'd like. The rule of thumb is to raise it one number and allow it to adjust for 24 hours to see a change in internal temperatures. Freezers can run more for several reasons. One is the amount of product inside- the more the merrier. More frozen food will hold the temperatures longer. Another common issue is location, my own freezer is located in the garage at my house and runs quite a bit in the summer, as the temperature outside increases the lenght and frequency of the freezer running will increase. Freezers transfer the heat they remove from inside the box to the outside of the box, so the warmer it is outside, the longer they have to run to do the job.
Also be sure to keep a good eye on this, keep a thermometer in it and make sure you are not having to turn it way up to get it to "0 f" at least, as you may have a sealed system problem. Real ice cream (not fat free or sherbert) is a great indicator of temperatures- at 0 degrees f. real ice cream is firm but scoopable, 5 below and it's pretty hard, 5 above and is't starting to get soft on the outside.
Hope this was helpful to you!

The temperature display is reading 0 degrees

Zero degrees F is the normal operating temperature for a freezer. The compressor should not come on until the time is above that.

I just moved into a home with a kenmore chest freezer. This is a real dumb question, but which symbol means on. Should the circle be showing for "on" or should the line be showing for "on"?

Some freezer models feature a temperature
monitor that provides an audible
alarm. The temperature monitor alarm is
located near the temperature control

The alarm sounds if the temperature in
the freezer rises 10° F (12° C) or more
above normal for selected setting. Alarm
may sound if temperature control dial is
turned to a much colder setting or if a
large amount of unfrozen food is added at
one time. Alarm is controlled by a three
position switch

0 = OFF prevents alarm from sounding
when freezer is warm, such as during
initial start-up or defrosting.
• ✓ = TEST sounds alarm regardless of
temperature. Alarm system should be
tested at least once a month.
1 = ON is proper setting for normal
freezer use. Return switch to 1 after
defrosting.

Running continuously

Hello bxrjer,
Welcome,

You said, you have a FFU20FC6AW2 freezer that I have noticed is running continuously. Explains my $400 electric bill.

How old is the freezer?

The thermostat may be faulty.
But check out this list first.

If the black tubes running back and forth that carry the freon is under the freezer and behind the plastic grill down near the floor you may want to remove the grill cover and gently run a refrigerator brush across the coils. Ive seen them never cleaned and full of lint and dust 2 inches thick.
This is not good for the freezer or any refrigerator too!
They need to be clean so air can run across them or they over heat and get hot.
Room or outside weather is hot. It is normal for the freezer to work harder under these
conditions.

Reasons why Freezer may run too much or too long.

1.Freezer had recently been disconnected for a period of time. Freezer requires 4 hours to cool
down completely.
2.Large amounts of warm or hot food have been stored recently. Warm food will cause the
freezer to run more until the desired temperature is reached.
3.Door is kept open too long or too frequently. Warm air enters the freezer every time the door
is opened. Open the door less often.

4.Freezer door may be slightly open. (Freezer is not level. It rocks on the floor when it is moved slightly. This condition can force the cabinet out of square and misaligned the door.Freezer needs to be leveled if this occurs.
Floor is uneven or weak. Freezer rocks on the floor when it is moved slightly. Level the floor by using metal or wood shims under the freezer or brace floor supporting the freezer.

5.Temperature control is set too cold. Turn the control knob to a warmer setting. Allow several
hours for the temperature to stabilize.
6.Freezer gasket is dirty, worn, cracked, or poorly fitted. Clean or change gasket. Leaks in the
door seal will cause freezer to run longer in order to maintain desired temperature.

Normal operating pressures

Normal operating pressures will change as the freezer reaches the selected temperatures on the inside. Normals of minus 14 degrees on the inside would be around minus 4 psi on the suction and 150 pis on discharge. Now checking the pressure will require a set of guages that have been purged with the same freon before connecting with the suction line on freezer. If not purged the suction line will draw outside air into the system and cause freezing of air and moisture inside the capillary tube rendering the freezer inoperative, Hope this helps, Sea Breeze
