If you have the operating system CD then boot from that and if it is a Windows retail cd then you will have several options. If it is a recovery cd then the only option might require a complete format and reinstall. Pressing F12 will give you a one time list of boot options. Some machines like Compaq use F10 for recovery. Look for the boot options on the lower part of the screen at boot. If only a blue screen appears initially then try pressing F2, F1 or Delete right after the first beep. If there is no beep then make sure all drives are empty, all peripherals disconnected. Blue screen means that you have a display. Beep codes are listed in the manual or on the BIOS manufacture's website. Faulty RAM can cause this problem as well. Try reseating the RAM. More details will get you more help if these tips do not resolve the issue. Best wishes to you.

Would changing laptop's hard drive help get rid of 'PC needs to be repaired' blue screen?

If you have access to another PC, you can put the drive in there and "format" it. That will wipe everything from it, so you can load from the recovery CDs. Likely no need to buy new drive.

Laptop slammed shut

That is because the Recovery cannot access the partition where the recovery program is located. Sounds as if you lost both the Recovery and the Windows OS. If the Drive is working ok, reinstall Windows from the start.

Hi, During the boot at the THINKPAD SCREEN press the Thinkvantage key ( Blue button ) it will launch rescue and recovery and allow you to reboot factory. This only works if you did not corrupted/deleted the rescue and recovery hidden partition on the HDD. Otherwise you will need the rescue and recovery CD to proceed. IBM/Lenovo support should be able to provide you the CD. thanks and have a nice day J-

It sounds like you may have 2 problems. 1) as you've state you have a virus; this being the case I suggest reinstalling your operating system. 2) if it's blue screening at BIOS then you most likely have an issue with your memory\RAM. The virus shouldn't be causing it to blue screen while in the BIOS; although it's not unheard of. When you reinstall Windows you will lose everything. You can restore; if you have a recovery partition, by tapping F8 while booting up. It should go to a black screen with white text. If you see Utilities or Recovery, then select that and press enter. If you don't have a recovery partition then you will have to use a recovery disc to reinstall. If you don't have a disc or a CD\DVD ROM then you will be better off taking it to a repair shop where they should have what is needed to reinstall your operating system.
