Good Day Tkidwell!

Better check and clean the ADF platen glass and the flatbed scanner glass.

Use a lint clothe moistened with alcohol or water and gently wipe the dirt in the glasses of the ADF platen and flatbed scanner.

You can also try cleaning the roller by performing the deep cleaning.

My HL2040 printer is printing black vertical lines along the right-hand side of the page, about 3" or so. A month ago I took it apart and cleaned the roller. Still doing it.

If the lines go all the way down the page, check the position of the corona wire cleaner tab (blue or green) at the top front of the drum unit. if not parked fully to one side it will create a solid black lines where it blocks the laser. Otherwise look for some other foreign object (or torn paper piece) that may be blocking the laser from the drum. If the lines are thin and shark, check for scratches on the drum (not repairable without replacing drum). If the lines are uneven thickness but in a pattern that repeats down the page every few inches, then the film on the drum is probably worn or wearing away and the drum needs to be replaced.

Vertical black lines on right side of page

Remove the printer cartridge and check for any obstructions. Then replace the printer cartridge and attempt to print again. Make sure the cartridge is fitting firmly. Check the printer menu for a cartridge cleaning option. Print a test page by right clicking the printer, selecting Printer Properties and Print Test Page.

You may need to replace the cartridge.

Vertical lines printing on one side of the page

9 times out of 10 this is coming from one of the two drum (photoconductor) units. Just open the right side door, release the waste toner box, and remove the 2 drum units. The larger one is the color drum unit and the smaller one is the black. Look down thru the slot in the top of the unit (3 slots in the color drum) and look at the green colored drum surface. On one end or the other you should be able to see the same lines on the drum surface that you are seeing on the paper. One of the 2 drum units should have the lines and that will tell you which one will need to be replaced. Hopefully it will be the black drum unit as they are relatively cheap. The color ones are $350 to $400
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

Three small white vertical lines in black printwhere the black does not print. Not present in other colors.

This is coming from the Black Drum Unit. You may be able to remove the unit and look into the slot on the top. You should see the drum which is green in color and may be able to see the lines. Not much you can do with these units so you may just have to replace it.

Black vertical lines on printed pages

check the "photoconductor unit" (pg 37 in the Maintance manual)

ours was doing it with the magenta and saw a faint 'scratch' on the roller. will attempt to replace and report back if this fixes it.

Vertical black line down right side

Did you carefully inspect all through the paper path for some fuzz, or a small piece of paper smearing the print?
The other issue would be the fuser. Do you see any reprinting of images or letters in that area?
What you can do is set the machine to print 2 or more pages and open a cover or turn off the power to jam the prints in the machine. See if the line is on the drum or not. If not then you have a fuser roller issue which would require replacing the fuser.
