Question about Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital Camera
Same, problem and whacking it actually works! Dunno how long it will stay "fixed" though, but I guess I'll just give it a whack again when it goes black again. Saves 100+ dollars! You have to hit it quite hard (with your hand). If you are looking at the LCD hit the bottom left on the side. Seems to do the trick!

I had the same thing happen and by searching around for a solution
today I came across is easy fix - give the camera a little "whack". It
worked like a charm for me and several other people with the same
issue. The issue was on this site but I can't find the exact one to
link it. I hope it works for the rest of you - other people have paid
the $100 to get it fixed, try this first!
If that doesn't work contact canon and see if they will honor your problem according to this advisory :http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&fcategoryid=221&modelid=10468&keycode=2112&id=48264

As an engineer...I'm appalled that that just fixed my camera that has been black for about 2 months now. Thanks for the fix!

I just searched the web for a solution to fix the same problem with my SD1000. I had already tried softly tapping the camera but nothing happened. After reading your solution I gave it a harder bump to the bottom and side with the battery out and it fixed the problem. Thank you for providing this unusual solution. 10/9/2008
