Question about Yamaha RX-V2700 Receiver
Try this first... unplug amp from the wall overnight and see if it powers up the same in the morning. If the problem is still there, then unplug and leave for 10 days....I know that's a while, but what we are trying to do here is reset the unit back to defaults. One of these 2 methods will allow the working memory of the unit to be cleared, and the mute problem will go away. You WILL also loose all your station presets and surround levels settings also, a small compromise to get it working again.
Another approach is to repair the remote control...I could talk you through that also. You choose. Comment back to me here if you want to go the full method and fix the remote :)

The display on an amp has two components.
A small Lamp (light bulb)
A LCD display with a color filter.
Normally when the display goes out the problem is with the lamp
The lamp on my RXV 870 died after about 9 years of use.
I called Yamaha and was able to by a replacement.
The lamp is an odd voltage 14.5 if I recall.
Looking at the receipt i should have bought 3 for the cost of shipping. It cost about 10.00 cnd,

Out of curiosity, could you please elaborate on your issue. My RX-730 display is completely dead. It should actually have two lights, one general backlight and then the LCD display to indicate station frequency, etc. Does either one of these work for you? If so, which one? Can you check the voltage at the output terminals for your backlight? It is pretty simple, just trace the wires from the display back to the connector header on the board and put your VOM leads across the two terminals with the unit powered up. What voltage reading are you getting. I just checked mine and read about 0.12 volts which seems kind of low for a lamp circuit. I'll let you know what the service manual says when I get my hands on one.
