HI,

If your washer doesn't agitate, check these:

Lid switch
Motor coupler
Belts
Clutch
Drive motor
Drive pulleys
Transmission
Agitator
Lid switch Ifthe lid switch is defective, the washing machine may not agitate orfunction at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housingnear the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or frontof the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, youneed to replace it.

Motor coupler Manywashers produced by Whirlpool® use a small, relatively inexpensivemotor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft ofthe motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. If this happens, you need tocompletely replace it.

Belts Manywashing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badlyworn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer.(Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristicsnot found in automotive belts.)

Clutch Ifyour washer was made by GE®, it may use a clutch for agitating theclothes. As the clutch wears out, it may prevent the washer fromagitating well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replaceit. For this job, you probably want to hire a qualified appliancerepair technician.

Drive motor Manywasher brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs inone direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible fora motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in theother. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor.

Drive pulleys The motor or transmission drive pulley may be worn and unable to turn the drive belt. If so, replace the pulley.

Transmission The transmission could have either of these problems:

  • Olderwashers produced by Whirlpool® have a transmission with anelectro-mechanical shifter. If the shifter becomes even partiallydefective, the unit may not agitate properly or at all.

  • The transmission may have a worn or broken gear, or some other internal problem.

If you suspect a transmission problem, you may have to call a qualified appliance repair technician to repair it.

Agitator Theinside of the agitator--where the transmission shaft attaches--canbecome worn, and strip out the spline that allows the agitator toproperly grip the shaft. Then the transmission shaft rotates back andforth as it should, but the agitator doesn't move properly. If thishappens, you may need to replace the agitator and/or the transmissionspline.

Please don't forget to accept the solution.

My Frigidaire Commercial Series FCCW3000FS 27" Coin Operated Front-Load Washer will not agitate or spin clothes out. Please HELP!

You should check your serial number at this link:http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml09/09292.html

There was a voluntary recall issued on your model number. The serial number will confirm if your machine is affected.

As to your problem, i would still suspect drain pump is struggling or inoperable. However if it seems to drain ok and your pump is still relatively quiet except for a nice mellow steady hum (there should be no rattling sound) then i'd take a look at the pressure switch. The pressure switch sends the signal to begin agitation (water level in tub is full) and spin (water in tub is drained.)

Washer will spin but won't agitate and it "puts the brakes on" when finished spinning

Hello, Thank You for using FixYa. I will be helping you today. This unit spins in one direction for spin and the other for agitate. If its not agitating and the motor is running then the trans failed. Some of these have a ten year trans and labor warranty. Go to maytag site and put in your model and serial and check the warranty. And the brakes on this unit are pretty quick to stop.
Thank You and please rate my answer if it was helpful..

Both drum and agitator spin during wash cycle. Is this normal?

What is the age and model number of the washer? It could be as simple as a problem with a part inside the agitator or it could be a bad transmission. A complete model and serial number from the washer not the book.
