Hi there.
It could be static build up. Take out battery and mains lead. Press power
on switch and hold for 30 seconds. Re install battery and then power
cord. and let charge for recommended time. Also make sure that the
power cord isn't connected to an extension. Straight from wall socket.
Is the battery a third party?

Check your DC Power Jack which is where the power cord plugs
into the computer is bad. Take an ink pen and push the tip inside the
jack and see if the little pin wiggles, if so the jack is bad. You'll have to
take the laptop apart to fix it. Most times it is soldered onto the
motherboard, so you will have to desolder the old and solder a new one.

I followed your suggestion and it worked perfectly for one full charge. When I recharged it a second time and used the laptop with battery power it randomly shut down twice. I can't boot it up unless the charger is plugged in, and if i disconnect the charger it shuts down. the battery meter says it's fully charged. it is a third party battery, and no, I do not use extension cords.
