when you say now it lights. is just the ignitor lighting?or can you hear the gas flowing??? can you feel it heating at all?? should start at 100 degrees and climb up from there. no reason for it not to heat past 200 (unless set to Celsius which default setting of 350 =190degress) therefore will not heat past 200. and wont let you try to heat to 425 , that would be off the charts of Celsius conversion. sensor problem would eitherno t let stove come on or wouldnt stop from heating eitherway a code would come up in the display
Remove the bottom plate on the stove which is likely help in place by a couple of bolts at the back. Remove the plate & inspect the bake element underneath. It is probably melted or broken in some area. It it does need replacing unplug the stove from the wall & remove one of the back panels at the back of the stove which access the wiring at this height on the stove. Disconnect the element.
Installation of new element is the same but in reverse.
When using Broil, it is normal for only the top element to work and it depends on the oven whether both should be on or not for baking but typically, baking does not use the upper element otherwise it could burn baked goods.
If setting the temperature higher than 350 does not cause the lower element to turn on, then it's likely that the thermostat has failed and can no longer respond to the temperature set.
The fact that both elements work under some conditions means that both of the heater elements are working at least some of the time.
Because of the primitive nature of the elements, it isn't possible for them to just become 'weak' but they can interrupt themselves if there is a break in the resistance element but you could only separate the two possibilities by measuring the hot coil and that would be difficult unless you can pull the range out and access the AC feed lines that go to the element.
Obviously, the power would have to be disconnected and the measurement done quickly so the element didn't have time to cool and regain continuity.
There are several things to check.
1) check the broil element
The broil element participates in the preheat and if the element isn't working it will take forever to reach temp.If the element is good 2)check the broil relay
If the relay does not activate when you press"broil" the control needs to be repaired.They are a few more things to check but you can start with the above.

Shaffy, When baking only the bake element should heat. When broiling only the broil element (upper) should heat. Your oven is a Kitchenaid, you have a 5 year warranty on any electronic element or control board. You may have a temperature sensor that is not working right. The oven just might need to be calibrated, the instructions would be in your owners manual. Your bake element might be failing, it would have to be ohmed out. You also need to verify that the bake element is getting 240V. when turned on. Catriver...post back
