Does it say limited connection to network? You're connecting it through a wireless router right? Do you see your wireless router when you search for networks? I had similar problem with my previous Dell laptop. Wireless use to work untill one day it just stopped, found the networks, but kept giving me limited connection whenever i tried to connect. I found out the problem is linked with the driver. Dell laptop i had was also on XP OS. Maybe try reinstalling the drivers. After I formatted my computer and reinstalled drivers, it started working again. Hope this helps.
There's no way a USB can cause this problem...Its got nothing to do with network adapters unless internet connection uses a USB powered Wireless Network Adapter..
