This is actually a very easy task as long as you get a direct replacment board. If not the key essentials are the reversing valve contacts and the power contacts coming to the board.
As long as the board is a direct replacement you can switch wire to wire form the old board to the new board.

Please re comment me if you have any other questions.

Check low voltage at heatpump need 24voltsat R and C tterminal s if you have 24 volts on defrost board change board .if you dont have 24volts from r and c you have to go to indoor unit and look at low voltage wireing . Check wire nuts or when replace ing motor might have knock some loose check all low voltage. Hope this helps

HI-i have a coleman heat pump- on defrost it gives cold air- not normal. thanks

Do you have electric heat strips for auxillary or backup heat? When the heatpump goes into defrost, the electric heat strips or whatever your source of auxillary heat is, should come on to keep you from feeling the cold air. When the heat pump is in defrost it is essentially operating in the A/C mode, that is why you will feel cold air if the auxillary heat isn't working. You need find out why the auxillary heat isn't coming on if it isn't. It could be do to a bad seqencer or a burnt out element.

Is it normal for the outdoor unit on my coleman h/p to make a surging humming noise? the fan does not run during this period, approx. temp. is 28 degrees F. the fan runs 30 seconds befor the unit...

Sounds like your unit is going into defrost mode. When this happens the fan in the outdoor unit shuts off so you get more heat in the outdoor unit to defrost the coils. The heatpump is basically in A/C mode during defrost and the electric heat strips will kick in so you don't feel a cold blast of air in the house.

Where is the capacitor located on a coleman heatpump

If you're talking about the outside fan, look where the wire goes into the outside unit. The capacitor will be somewhere near the circuit board and will be round or oval and metal or plastic. If you're talking about the inside unit it will be with the electrical control in the air handler. Write down where the wires go. The terminals on the capacitor will be marked and for the outside unit you will either have 1 that runs both the fan and compressor or a seperate one for each. If you have 1 that runs both the wires must be reconnected to the right terminals. They will be marked COM, FAN, HERM(stands for compressor). Take the old one with you to get a new one. Let me know what you find.

I have ruud heatpump and it is covered in ice and it does not seem to be defrosting what could this be?

The defrost sensor attached to the outside coil is defective and or the defrost control board in the outside unit is defective.

To defrost the unit, turn the thermostat to cool and lower the temperature as low as it will go. Run in the cool mode until the coils defrost. Then return to heat mode.

Defrost cycles needlessly for extended time period

Without knowing what the problem was with the old board, you're not going to be able to figure much out, I don't think.

Did you check that temperature sensor I mentioned? You will have to pull the top off to get access to it. Normally found connected to one of the tubes for the coil, silver in color, with 2 wires connected to it, near the bottom of the base of the unit.
