Re: Where is the water filter
Is this a used refrig? If new then you should have a brand new filter. For my LG side-by-side the filter is in the top right corner on the frig side. 1/4 twist and it pulls out. But they are $$$$, I found a 3 pack online cheaper than local

I have seen this one other time in all my years of appliance repair and changing out the "water inlet valve" corrected the problem. I don't have an answer to why it did, but it did. Here is the valve for your unit. After you change the valve be sure to purge the water line for a good 5 - 10 mins to get all the nasty water out. Keep me posted!
Change the supply line to the plastic tube line or copper. Do not use a braided plastic or metal braided line these will make the water taste bad. Changed mine to the plastic line and cured mine, no filters needed.
Look behind the crisper in the fridge and see if it's molded inside the water reservoir. If it is you may be able to put some bleach in it to kill the mold and then run lots of water thru it to clean it out.
Check to see if the filter is in backwards. Try purging it too. Just keep running the water for a couple of minutes to see if the taste improves. If it doesn't and the filter isn't on backwards then get a new filter, that one is bad.
THANKS FOR YOU QUERY JACK.FIRSTLY DEPENDING ON HOW OLD THE APPLIANCES IS MOST MANUFACTURES USE THE SAME OR SIMALAR WATER FILTER SO THAT WILL BE YOUR BEST BET TO CHECK WITH THEM.NORMALY WEN THE ICE AND WATER TASTE FUNNY I HAVE FOUND THAT IT IS WHAT WE CALL ICE BURN AND THAT IS NORMALY WHEN THE ICE HAS GONE STALE OR IS STANDING FOR A LONG TIME TO SOLVE THAT IT IS BEST THAT YOU USE THE ICE UP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.HOPE THAT THIS SOLVES YOUR PROBLEM.
You do not say what type of hose or pipework in supplying water to the unit, if you have a washing machine style hose supplying the water then that is most likely the fault, replace with a copper of clear plastic type pipe, this is avaialbel from your local maytag, amana or admiral stockest you could also try fitting an in line water filter, it is not practicle or possible to replace all the water system components.
