I put brand new batteries in the camera and when I turn it on it says the batteries are dead and powers off. I have tried several batteries and it does the same thing

How old is your camera? Has it been exposed to salty air/ any moisture. if so that is the problem. if not older camers will need batteries like the energizer lithiums to work. They are very strong batteries. any digital will need specialty batteries to perform for more than a few shots.
