My gateway laptop is the second one that I have had since Dec. 2007. This one I got in July of 08. It has been working fine but recently it wouldn't hold a charge and now it won't charge at all. The computer shows that it is plugged in but says that it isn't charging. Another problem that I have noticed lately is that when I close my laptop with stuff still on the screen and then I open it again it doesn't recognize that I opened the laptop again and I have to do a hard shutdown causing me to lose all unsaved material. It doesn't matter if i close it and open it right away or if I leave it shut overnight it does the same thing.

I found out how to solve this problem...first power down your computer. Then take out the battery, remove the power supply, and then hold down the power button for 30 secs. Put the power supply in only (not the battery). Start your computer after everything is done loading up put the battery back in. Give it a min. and then you should be able to roll your cursor over the battery life indicator in the lower right corner of you computer and is should say charging. I have found that other people have had this problem and it has worked for myself and for them.

Hey my compaq labtop battery wont work i tried everything like charging all night -nothing please if you know how to fix this please e-mail me at jessezink@yahoo.com

The battery may have a failed protective device inside of it. If it new, the battery should be covered by warranty.

When the battery is installed in laptop and charger plugged in, there should be a light on laptop that lights up to show it is plugged into a charging source/ power source.

if the light does not light, see if it will light up with battery removed from laptop. If it does not light up, and you cannot power up the laptop- the power supply has failed.

Kensington power outlset beeping

the fit on the end of the battery adapter basically shorts and back fires and holds electricity in the battery making it unable to connect at the wall and flow again .... so you have to be able to Release the bent up or saved electricity the battery retained... by either plugging it in at the same time your finger can turn your computer on generating an instant flow.. this is very touchy area...but this morning after many times of doing it this above way i simply plugged my new iphone into the usb side socket to create a flow ( i have nothing that fits the adapters) and with the first plug from phone to usb port WALA xox I've been doing this off and on for 2 years since i first purchased it but it has never ever charged my battery ~ it's junk product but nothing else was available to purchase

I have a Gateway MX8738; it is not charging. When I plug the power pack into the outlet the green light on the power pack is solid; once I plug it into the laptop, it starts flashing and I will not charge....

possibly a bad cell in the battery. I'm not sure how old your unit is but if it has a ni-cad or nickel cadmium battery, they are constructed similar to an electrolytic capicitor with alternate layers of paper dielectric and metal electrode. If the cell is old and breaks down, it can short out. If this is the case, it will appear to the charger as though you are trying to charge too few cells thereby drawing more current than it was designed for. The same is basically true for lithium batteries except they are more durable. The above possibility still exists but is less likely. If you are using NiMH, (nickel metal hydryde) battery, when these go bad they usually have an increase in internal resistance and appear as an open or higher resistance in the circuit rather than a short circuit or zero resistance unless the cell itself has been physically crushed or dented in which case it would show up as a short circuit within the cell. In any case, in my opinion, your charger is detecting a defective battery.
I hope this helps.
good luck.

Have a Gateway Laptop Computer Model #MT6708. Previously computer had blank screen and no power. Currently purchased new battery and power cord. Computer now operating screen and power is on. However, when...

First thing check that the battery charge light is on when the battery and the charger are connected.
If it is it indicates that the power supply is charging the battery,
If it isnt it may indicate a fault with the battery or that the charger is not compatable with the laptop or that there is a fault with the charger.
If the battery is charging then try running the laptop on battery only without the charger and on charger only without the battery.
This will eliminate which one is faulty.

You mentioned that if you wiggle the cord then the light comes on again.
Check to see if the charger end plug is lose or the actual port on the laptop is lose.
If the charger plug is lose then return to seller and make sure they gave you the correct charger. if the actual port on laptop is lose then perhaps u got a bad connection and you need electrician or local laptop technician to open it up and solder properly on motherboard.

Let me know how it goes.

Acer wont keep charge but works when pluged in

if you have a ni-mh battery pack, some people report success by identifying positive and negative leads and tapping with 50v welding current + to + , - to - for a second or two to shock the nickel crystals out from the cell inside...

you can also rebuild your battery pack by replacing the cells (they look like c cell batteries)....

but if you have lithium cells DO NOT shock them as they'll blow up in your face and maybe kill ya...
ni-mh could too... (but not nearly as likely)

basically your battery is dead, and you need a new battery.

Regarding battery problem/battery not charging

Hi Jasbir, Laptop batteries only have a set life span and if your battery does not hold charge the only solution is topurchase another battery. You will find the cheapest way to do this is to search the computer section of ebay [laptop assessories ]
and find the battery for your laptop model.
